PETER MAX (1937-) “Retro Suite V: Samurai Sail” Lithograph
This color lithograph by renowned German-American Pop artist Peter Max (1937-) depicts a small boat adrift at sea, arrays of highly gestural brushstrokes creating an impressive composition of abstracted forms and color. Max’s signature psychedelic style has remained popular with collectors since he first began exhibiting in the early 1960’s with Max often utilizing American iconography within much of his work. About the Artist:
Peter Max Finkelstein was born on October 19, 1937 in Berlin, Germany. The son of German Jews, Max’s family fled Berlin a year after his birth and settled in Shanghai, China, where they lived for the next ten years. From there, his family moved to Israel and eventually westward, stopping in Paris for several months: an experience that Max would later credit to fostering his appreciation for art. Finally settling in Brooklyn, New York, Max began formal art training at the Art Students League of New York, eventually setting up a studio with his friend Tom Daly in 1962. Beginning work in advertising, Max’s usage in counter culture and psychedelic imagery quickly gained popularity, leading him to an appearance on The Tonight Show and designing cover art for Life Magazine. By 1974, Max was commissioned by the United State Postal Service to design a stamp commemorating the Expo ‘74 World’s Fair in Spokane, Washington, followed by the book, “Peter Max Paints America”, a commemoration of the United States Bicentennial. Along with many other pop culture projects and commissions, Max operated galleries throughout the world that sold his work and commercialized products. A modern icon of the Pop Art movement, Max currently resides in New York with his two adult children; his work continues to remain popular with collectors and galleries alike.

Jeré were produced and marketed by Artisan House, an art production for the average consumer that was founded by the duo in 1963. Freiler was the chief of production and Fels was the chief of design. They employed a great number of minorities and handicapped people and at one point employed 300 people. They sold the company in 1972. Early C. Jeré works were produced in California, but continue to be made overseas since the company’s outsourcing in 2003. Freiler passed away in 2008, Fels in 2013 at 103 years old.

About the Artist:
Dame Barbara Hepworth was born on January 10th, 1903 in Wakefield, West Riding of Yorkshire, the eldest daughter to a middle class family. Proficient in music and the arts, Hepworth won a scholarship to study at the Leeds School of Art in 1920, where she met Henry Moore, whom she would befriend and maintain a friendly rivalry throughout their professional careers. Despite the isolation of working in a male-dominated environment, Hepworth won a second scholarship to attend the Royal College of Art in 1921 and studied there until her graduation in 1924. After graduation, Hepworth traveled to Italy and learned how to carve marble from sculptor Giovanni Ardini, marrying fellow sculptor John Skeaping and having her first child before moving back to London. Hepworth fell in love with painter Ben Nicholson, who she would marry in 1938, while becoming highly interested in abstraction and she later traced to Paris to visit the studios of Pablo Picasso, Jean Arp, and Constantin Brancusi. The breakout of World War II brought new challenges to Hepworth, who maintained her career while also raising triplets. In 1939, Hepworth and her family moved to St. Ives in Cornwall, where she would live the rest of her life. Hepworth continued working and, despite her ambivalence toward international market recognition, she eventually established gallery relationships in the United States in the 1950s before expanding her studio space in 1960. Working on large scale commissions, Hepworth began experimenting with lithography in her later work and received a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 1958, followed by a Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 1965. Hepworth remained working until her death at the hands of an accidental fire in her studio in 1975 at the age of 72. Her studio and home have since become the Barbara Hepworth Museum and her work has been shown throughout the world, including major retrospectives and exhibitions at the Tate and the Heide Museum of Modern Art.

Specifically designed front and back cover by Picasso for this edition of Verve Magazine, this issue is completely dedicated to the oeuvre of the artist. Made in Vallauris, Paris, each page was produced through a lithograph, heliogravure and quadrichromia printing process by Draeger Frerés to create vivid documentation of Picasso's work. Due to the nature of the publication, many were discarded through the years, leaving this highly sought after and desirable. Because of the age of the magazine, this copy contains damage and tears throughout.

BLAS OLLEROS Y QUINTANA (1851-1919) Original Oil on Canvas Painting – Signed
Original oil on canvas by noted 19th century Spanish painter Blas Olleros y Quintana (1851-1919) depicts a harbor scene. Six female figures drift in a boat ornamented with verdure and paper lanterns while other boaters wave in the distance; a perfect example of Olleros' appeal towards scenes of leisure and celebration. Housed in an ornate gold frame and crowned with a museum light, this opulent painting is signed by Olleros in the lower right corner of the painting.
About the Artist:
Blas Olleros y Quintana was born in 1851 in Avila, Spain. By 1874, the Avila City Council awarded Olleros a grant to further his art education in Rome. After completing his studies in Rome, Olleros relocated to Paris for three years, becoming acquainted with the Spanish portrait painter Palmaroli, who became a great influence on his work. For much of the 1880’s Olleros resided in Naples, Italy, where he became known as “Il Improvvisatore” or, “The Improviser”. He adopted Italy as his new homeland and remained there for most of his adult life. His subject matter was varied and included landscapes, seascapes, figures, genre and historical scenes. A great deal of his work focused on Neapolitan scenery, especially harbor scenes. He later resided in Florence and died there in 1919.

JEANNE ISENHART(1920-2005) Original Oil on Canvas “Festival of Flowers”
Original oil on canvas painting by renowned Ohio artist Jeanne Isenhart (1920-2005) depicts a scene of a street market in springtime. Unlike many of Isenhart’s pieces, this scene is a closer look at one of the towns she created during her painting career. Perusers stroll about a brick street near the center of town while flower vendors attract customers with their bright stock of florals. Framed in gold and signed by the artist in the lower right corner of the painting.
About the Artist:
Jeanne Isenhart (1920-2005) was born in Gloversville, New York and studied at the Rhode Island School of Art and Design before serving in the Navy during World War II. Isenhart spent a large portion of her adult career as an interior designer before turning to painting at the age of 60. Described as creating “refined primitive” oil paintings, she created over 600 works of art. Collections of her work include that of the Ohio State House and the Ohio Governor’s Mansion. Isenhart exhibited her work largely in the Midwest and in New York City. She died at 85 in 2005 at the age of 85 in Newark, Ohio.

An original signed and numbered lithograph by famed French artist André Masson (1896-1987) reminiscent of Masson’s works in automatic drawing. Featuring graphic marks on a vivid ground of red, blue, yellow, and green, Masson’s surrealistic mark-making invites viewers to investigate the image and form their own meaning within the piece. Framed in silver and signed and numbered at the bottom.
About the Artist: André Masson(1896-1987) was born in Balagny-sur-Thérain, Oise and began to study art at the age of 11 at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, later moving his studies to Paris. Masson’s early work displayed an interest in Cubism, but he later became more closely associated with Surrealism, becoming more of the more enthusiastic advocates of automatic drawing; a practice in which the hand is allowed to move randomly across the paper or canvas. Under the German occupation of France, Masson was labeled a degenerate artist by the Nazi regime and he later moved away from Surrealism, adopting a more structured style with themes of eroticism and violence. After escaping France to America, Masson’s work became an important influence on burgeoning Abstract Expressionists, such as Jackson Pollock, as he worked in Connecticut. Following the war, he returned to France and continued to paint until his death in 1987 at the age of 91.

Sharon Dougherty, a Columbus, Ohio artist, is represented by Art Access Gallery of Bexley, Ohio. Earning a Bachelor's of Science degree, Dougherty continued her education at The Ohio State University obtaining her Master's of Fine Arts. She has held solo exhibitions at The Ohio State University, College of Eastern Utah, LaGrange College, and is included in many private collections. Dougherty's work is held in twenty two corporate collections such as Columbus City Hall to National Art Service in Houston, Texas.
