ANDRÉ MASSON (1896-1987) Signed and Numbered Lithograph

$1,200.00

An original signed and numbered lithograph by famed French artist André Masson (1896-1987) reminiscent of Masson’s works in automatic drawing. Featuring graphic marks on a vivid ground of red, blue, yellow, and green, Masson’s surrealistic mark-making invites viewers to investigate the image and form their own meaning within the piece. Framed in silver and signed and numbered at the bottom.

About the Artist: André Masson(1896-1987) was born in Balagny-sur-Thérain, Oise and began to study art at the age of 11 at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, later moving his studies to Paris. Masson’s early work displayed an interest in Cubism, but he later became more closely associated with Surrealism, becoming more of the more enthusiastic advocates of automatic drawing; a practice in which the hand is allowed to move randomly across the paper or canvas. Under the German occupation of France, Masson was labeled a degenerate artist by the Nazi regime and he later moved away from Surrealism, adopting a more structured style with themes of eroticism and violence. After escaping France to America, Masson’s work became an important influence on burgeoning Abstract Expressionists, such as Jackson Pollock, as he worked in Connecticut.  Following the war, he returned to France and continued to paint until his death in 1987 at the age of 91.

JACQUES VILLON “The Poet” Etching

$2,200.00
Jacque Villon (1875-1963) was a skilled printmaker living in Paris. This etching titled “The Poet” uses a striking linear technique to depict a man. Signed on plate by artist, dated ‘33. Hand signed on print. Writing in corner may say “épreuve Artiste”, which would indicate an artist proof. About the Artist: Jacques Villon (1875-1963), born Emile Méry Frédéric Gaston Duchamp, was a French Cubist artist who also was a printmaker and abstract painter. He was born to a wealthy and artistic family, and was the eldest of three successful artist siblings including Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968). He moved to Montmartre in Paris with his brother Raymond Duchamp in 1894. He focused heavily on his printmaking starting in 1906, primarily in drypoint method. He remained fairly isolated despite the fact that he was a part of a bustling art scene, making him obscure for many years. ALVAR SUÑOL (1935-) Limited Edition Lithograph

SOLD
Limited edition lithograph from noted Spanish painter Alvar Suñol (1935-) depicts a stylized figure playing a guitar to a solitary dove, a sweeping background of teal muddying the composition. Renowned for his technical expertise and recognized as one of the last active modernist painters, Suñol has crafted a piece to be sought after by informed art collectors. Housed in a wood frame with gold accents, this limited edition lithograph is signed and numbered by Suñol along the bottom of the print. About the Artist: Alvar Suñol was born in 1935 in the Catalan fishing village of Montat, Spain along the Mediterranean coast near Barcelona. SID CHAFETZ (1922-2013) “Surrounded by Her Treasures” Original Woodcut

$995.00
Original woodcut by Columbus-based printmaker Sid Chafetz (1922-2013) depicts the portrait of a smiling woman stationed in front of a mantle place, a large dog panting beside her. Printed in layered tones of ink, the woman is surrounded by small sculptures and paintings hanging on the wall behind her, suggesting this woman was a prominent collector encountered by Chafetz. Matted and housed in a postmodern pink and black frame that accentuates the color palette of the piece, this original woodcut is titled, signed, and numbered by Chafetz along the bottom of the print. About the Artist: Sid Chafetz (1922-2013) was an artist and professor based in Columbus, Ohio. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, he attended Rhode Island School of Design before being drafted into the US Army in 1942. He returned after his service and graduated in 1947. He continued his education in France at L’Ecole Americaine des Beaux-Arts and the Acadãmie Julian, alongside artists Fernand Lãger and Stanley W. Hayter. Chafetz would then teach at The Ohio State University beginning in 1948, and was an active part of developing the printmaking program within the Department of Art. He retired from teaching in 1982 to focus on his own art. Deeply satirical with beliefs, his works bear a haunting style laden with politics, education, and literature. This woodcut is amongst hundreds of pieces of art that are available at our location in Grandview! Come in today and see the full collection.
