Thought to be a lost relic from Thomas Bang’s early career, “Moon and ¼” was painted in 1964 during a period of exploration of pop art and hard edge painting. Bang’s interpretation of these styles focused on dynamic space, stability of composition, and deconstruction of symmetry. Exceedingly vibrant tones of pink, green, and yellow create forms that are vaguely referential, per pop art style, but are abstracted with hard edge execution. Diagonal organization of the composition breaks down perception of the image to play with movement and space. This painting represents a moment in Bang’s career, before his progression to his more well known three-dimensional installations.   About the Artist: Thomas Bang (1938) is a Copenhagen born artist who has had a long and evolutionary career. He moved to the United States with his parents and went on to study art at the University of Cincinnati, Cleveland Institute of Art, Yale University, and the University of Southern California spanning 1958-1964. He was a part of experimental art movements such as Minimal Art, Pop Art, and Conceptual Art. Driven by existentialist concepts, Bang throughout his career has deconstructed every aspect of art as a practice and as a presentation.
