Originally studying fashion after serving in World War II, Vanderveen began mastering Chinese glazing techniques and forms before moving to California to create his sophisticated animal sculptures. This statue is carved from white marble and depicts an ichthyocentaur grasping at a female nude, likely a depiction of the Greek god Triton and his consort, Libya.
