Vintage Large BERTOIA Diamond Chair
Designed by Harry Bertoia (1915-1978) in 1952, this Diamond Chair is an astounding study in space, form, and function by one of the master sculptors of the 20th century. This chair has a large diamond shaped backing composed of wires in a gridded fashion to envelop the sitter. Sled style legs keep the chair sturdy, while not detracting from the modern aesthetic this chair provides. An ideal option for the design enthusiast, this chair offers a modern approach to furniture arrangement.
About the Designer:
Harry Bertoia (1915-1978) was born in San Lorenzo, Italy on March 10, 1915. Presented the opportunity to move to Detroit at age 15, Bertoia moved to America and lived with his older brother, Oreste. In 1937, he received a scholarship to study at the Cranbrook Academy of Art where he encountered Ray and Charles Eames and Florence Knoll for the first time. A gifted artist who dabbled in jewelry making, sculpture, and furniture design, Bertoia introduced his collection for Knoll in 1952, which included the famous diamond chair: a fluid, sculptural form made from a welded lattice work of steel. In Bertoia's own words, "If you look at these chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture. Space passes right through them." Bertoia died in Barto, Pennsylvania, at the age of 63 in 1978.
