ANDRÉ MASSON (1896-1987) Signed and Numbered Lithograph

$1,200.00

An original signed and numbered lithograph by famed French artist André Masson (1896-1987) reminiscent of Masson’s works in automatic drawing. Featuring graphic marks on a vivid ground of red, blue, yellow, and green, Masson’s surrealistic mark-making invites viewers to investigate the image and form their own meaning within the piece. Framed in silver and signed and numbered at the bottom.

About the Artist: André Masson(1896-1987) was born in Balagny-sur-Thérain, Oise and began to study art at the age of 11 at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, later moving his studies to Paris. Masson’s early work displayed an interest in Cubism, but he later became more closely associated with Surrealism, becoming more of the more enthusiastic advocates of automatic drawing; a practice in which the hand is allowed to move randomly across the paper or canvas. Under the German occupation of France, Masson was labeled a degenerate artist by the Nazi regime and he later moved away from Surrealism, adopting a more structured style with themes of eroticism and violence. After escaping France to America, Masson’s work became an important influence on burgeoning Abstract Expressionists, such as Jackson Pollock, as he worked in Connecticut.  Following the war, he returned to France and continued to paint until his death in 1987 at the age of 91.

NIKI DE SAINT PHALLE (1930-2002) “Remember?” Serigraph

$2,900.00
Serigraph by French-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002) is titled “Remember?” and depicts various moments of intimacy with a couple paired with whimsical colorful figures. Noted for her experimental style of making art that incorporated whimsical, light-hearted elements, Saint Phalle presents an image of charged eroticism meant to explore the passions she held for her lover. Housed in a modest silver frame, this serigraph is signed by the artist at the right hand corner of the print in faded ink. About the Artist: Catherine Marie-Agnès Fal de Saint Phalle was born in 1930 near Paris to a French father and an American mother as the second of five children. She spent most of her childhood in New York City, and summers in Connecticut or Long Island, though she frequently returned to France to visit relatives, becoming fluent in both French and English. Working as a fashion model in her late teens, Saint Phalle appeared on the cover of Life Magazine and in the pages of Elle and Harper’s Bazaar, and eloped with Henry Matthews, an author and childhood friend, at the age of 18. While Matthews studied music at Harvard University, Saint Phalle began to explore painting, being encouraged to paint as a form of therapy. At the end of the 1950s, Saint Phalle and her husband moved back to Paris. In 1960, however, the couple separated and Saint Phalle moved to a new apartment, established a studio, and met artist Jean Tinguely, with whom she would collaborate artistically. Within a year, they had moved in together and begun a romantic relationship. Saint Phalle became part of the Nouveau Réalisme movement along with Tinguely, Yves Klein, Arman and others, being the only woman in the group. Her most famous and prolific series of works, the Nanas, were begun in the mid-1960s and were inspired by a friend's pregnancy, her reflections on archetypal feminine forms, and the vexed positions that women occupy in modern, patriarchal societies. 'Nanas,' a French slang word roughly equivalent to 'broads,' is a title that encapsulates the theme of the everywoman as well as the casual denigration that closely accompanies the rhetorical grouping of women as a social category. Saint Phalle became one of the first artists to get involved with the AIDS crisis, with the 1980s also serving as the the most prolific period in the Nanas series. Working at her art until the very end, Saint Phalle died in La Jolla, California in May of 2002 and has been immortalized as an artist that has had a significant effect on the development of conceptual art and feminism. This serigraph is amongst hundreds of pieces of art that are available at our location in Grandview! Come in today and see the full collection.

SALVADOR DALI “The Smoke of Irascibility” Wood Engraving from The Divine Comedy

$895.00 $716.00
“The Smoke of Irascibility” is inspired by Purgatory, Canto 16 from Dante’s Divine Comedy. Two female figures with forlorn expressions directly face the viewer, with a third figure shrouded in shadows to the right. The two distinguishable figures hold each other for support. This work has a muted, grey palette. Mat in white and framed in rustic black. Information on reverse.  This wood engraving print is taken from a collective book of Salvador Dali’s illustrations of Dante’s The Divine Comedy. Dali was commissioned by the Italian government in 1950  to create a complete work of these illustrations to commemorate the 700th anniversary of Dante’s birth. After much dispute amongst the government powers over Dali’s self-admitted questionable morality, the exhibition and commission were cancelled. Dali had already become obsessed with the concept, so he decided to work with French fine art publisher Joseph Forêt instead. In 1959, the limited edition books were published. In May of 1960, and exhibition of 100 original watercolors by Salvador Dali illustrated 12,000 verses from The Divine Comedy. About the Artist: Salvador Dali (1904-1989) was a surrealist painter best known for his melting clocks. Dali was born in Spain to a wealthy family who encouraged him to pursue art. He studied in Madrid and later relocated to France where he met Pablo Picasso. His painting's typically featured dream-like motifs as he believed that dreams and imagination should take precedence over marginal human thought. Salvador Dali is widely regarded as one of the most influential artists of the 20th-century. This engraving is just one of hundreds of pieces of art that are available at our location in Grandview! JOHAN BARTHOLD JONGKIND (1819-1891) Original Oil Nightscape on Panel

$33000 $26,400.00
Own a piece of art history with this original oil on panel painting by the illustrious Dutch master and frontrunner of Impressionism, Johan Barthold Jongkind (1819-1891). This painting on panel features a moonlit maritime scene that Jongkind is best known for. This painting is considered “nocturnally perfect” with radiating moonlight in a cloudy sky being perfectly reflected in the shimmering waters underneath. The low horizon, deep contrast in color, and loose yet intentional brushstrokes are quintessential to Jongkind’s style. In 1874, Jongkind was extended an invitation to participate in the first exhibition of Impressionist works at the Salon in Paris, but declined. Following the rejection of his painting “Moonlight in Rotterdam” at the 1873 Salon, he refused to participate in such exhibitions again. This exact painting was created in 1874, at that pivotal point in the Impressionist movement and in art history as a whole. This painted panel is framed in an aged gold frame with a paper label on the reverse. Jongkind’s signature and the year 1874 is found in the bottom left corner of the composition. About the Artist: Johan Bathold Jongkind (1819-1891) was a Dutch painter and printmaker who is widely recognized as a forefather of Impressionism. After training at the art academy in The Hague, he moved to Monparnasse, Paris. After studying and working for two years, he was accepted into the Paris Salon exhibition. Despite receiving praise from critics Charles Baudelaire and Emile Zola, he experienced little success that induced depression worsened by alcoholism. Jongkind would continue to struggle with his mental health and dependency issues throughout his life. He returned to Holland for 5 years before going back to Paris, renting a studio and developing a style that would be critical to the consequent Impressionist movement. He met  Eugène Boudin, Alfred Sisley, and Claude Monet, and became a mentor to the three young artists. Monet  attributed the “definitive education” of his artistic eye to Jongkind. Jongkind mostly focused on marine landscapes, consistently employing strong contrasts and lively brushwork. Following in Dutch tradition, most of his works feature a low horizon to emphasize the sky. His legacy is strong in both the art market and in museum collections around the world. Although his contemporaries admired his work and style, his distaste for social gatherings and salons may have been what prevented him from coming to the forefront of the Impressionist movement. However, his background contributions were equally as important to him personally and many other young artists.

KAREL APPEL (1921-2006) Signed Color Lithograph “Heads Everywhere”

SOLD
Color lithograph by famed Dutch artist Karel Appel (1921-2006) depicts an abstracted scene in tones of flesh pinks, reds, and blues and enveloped by black line work and wash. Appel’s postmodernist sensibility to this work creates a brutally beautiful piece of art to add to the collection. Titled “Heads Everywhere”, this lithograph was originally purchased on Broad Street at the Columbus branch of the Pace Gallery in the 1960s-1970s. Dated to 1958, this lithograph is framed in black and signed and numbered in pencil by Appel at the bottom of the print.  About the Artist: Karel Appel was born in 1921 in the Netherlands, completing his first painting at the age of fourteen and eventually studying at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. Appel had his first show in 1946 and joined CoBrA in 1948; a movement named by the Belgian poet Christian Dotremont from the initials of the members' home countries' capital cities: Copenhagen, Brussels, Amsterdam. Appel’s work displayed spontaneous picture language and childish techniques to conjure fascinating images. His 1949 fresco 'Questioning Children' was placed in Amsterdam City Hall and caused controversy for this reason, causing the work to be covered up for ten years. Appel became the most famous of the CoBrA artists, with shows extending to the United States and portraits of jazz greats Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie becoming subject matter. Appel suffered from a heart ailment and died in 2006 at his home in Zurich, Switzerland. This lithograph is amongst hundreds of pieces of art that are available at our location in Grandview!
