He attempted to continue the generational legacy of doctors that the men in his family had perpetuated, but ended up pursuing his Masters of Fine Arts instead. He went on to teach painting and drawing at Ohio Dominican University for 37 years before retiring as a professor with tenure.

Vintage SID CHAFETZ(1922–2013) Hand Signed and Numbered Woodcut on Paper
Circa 1977, hand signed, and numbered #6/10, a three color woodcut print on paper. Titled "Recent Research Reveals Location of World's Largest Fastest Food Franchise" this print is exemplary of Chafetz's use of humor to tackle politics. An emeritus professor of art, at the Ohio State University, one might recognize the landscape depicted below as the university's campus, a subject often explored in Chafetz's work. Framed with newspaper clipping attached on back.
About the Artist:
Sid Chafetz (1922-2013) was an artist and professor based in Columbus, Ohio. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, he attended Rhode Island School of Design before being drafted into the US Army in 1942. He returned after his service and graduated in 1947. He continued his education in France at L’Ecole Americaine des Beaux-Arts and the Acadãmie Julian, alongside artists Fernand Lãger and Stanley W. Hayter. Chafetz would then teach at The Ohio State University beginning in 1948, and was an active part of developing the printmaking program within the Department of Art. He retired from teaching in 1982 to focus on his own art. Deeply satirical with beliefs, his works bear a haunting style laden with politics, education, and literature.

From his website: “Originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Michael Guinane moved to Columbus in 1996 to attend the Columbus College of Art and Design. He graduated with a BFA majoring in illustration in 2000. Michael continues to live and work in Columbus showing in galleries, public venues and doing privately commissioned works that are shown throughout the country while also teaching courses in painting at the Columbus Cultural Arts Center. He is represented by the Sharon Weiss Gallery in Columbus and the Sharpe Gallery in Maine.”

ROBERT MARTIN(1918-1998) Primitive Handcrafted Barn Wood Cut-Out of Soldier with Drum
Made by Ohio artist Robert Martin (1918-1998) from rustic barn wood, this primitive cut-out creates a soldier with crossed arms and a large drum, in a red hat and jacket. Hand painted details decorate the rustic wood while still highlighting the material. “1812” is painted on the base. “Primitives ‘76 Unlimited” written on reverse.

About the Artist:
Robert Martin (1918-1998) was born in Cleveland, Ohio and raised by his grandmother. His grandmother, having grown up in the Victorian Era, is responsible for the period's influence on his early works. Martin studied the painting from books of the masters, old and new. He worked from life, enjoying the process and interaction that was created. In the 1980s, he began working from photographs with his series of Victorian Village scenes. An ever-learning student, his work has distinctly different decades reflecting his progress and interests. Persisting was his use of oil on canvas, despite his training in other mediums. His poetic soul was evident in his philosophy as an artist.
