About the Artist:
Robert Martin (1918-1998) was born in Cleveland, Ohio and raised by his grandmother. His grandmother, having grown up in the Victorian Era, is responsible for the period's influence on his early works. Martin studied the painting from books of the masters, old and new. He worked from life, enjoying the process and interaction that was created. In the 1980s, he began working from photographs with his series of Victorian Village scenes. An ever-learning student, his work has distinctly different decades reflecting his progress and interests. Persisting was his use of oil on canvas, despite his training in other mediums. His poetic soul was evident in his philosophy as an artist.

GRANDPA SMOKY BROWN (1919-2005) “Portrait of Frank” Original Mixed Media on Board
This original mixed media painting by Columbus folk artist Grandpa Smoky Brown depicts a stylized portrait of a mustachioed man bearing the name “Frank” across a sparsely painted hat, with toothy figures looming in the background. A colleague of fellow Columbus legend, Aminah Robinson, Brown often used found materials to create his masterpieces, such as the broken picture frame and discarded packing tape used in this piece. Prominently signed on its front by the artist, this painting is dated to 1993 and offers a unique piece of Columbus, Ohio art history to the collection.
About the Artist:
Grandpa Smoky Brown (1919-2005) was an enigmatic folk artist from Dayton, Ohio who valued art and service to his Columbus community. Larger than life, Smoky was a storyteller and wove his stories into his paintings. Smoky Brown created art because he enjoyed it, and did not pursue a larger platform past his regional recognition. He regularly played with materials and methodology due to necessity, but his inventiveness only fueled his process and drive.
