After FREDERIC REMINGTON “The Cheyenne” Bronze Sculpture

$1,295.00
Cast from original molds by American artist Frederic Remington (1861-1909), this bronze sculpture depicts a Native American figure racing on horseback. Titled “The Cheyenne”, the original bronze version of this sculpture was cast in 1907 and now resides in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Standing on a freeform base, this bronze sculpture displays Remington’s cast signature at the base of the sculpture and displays a beautiful patina. About the Artist: Born in Canton, New York in 1861, Frederic Remington became an American sculptor and illustrator that specialized in depictions of Native Americans and the culture surrounding the old west. He attended school at Yale University for art, the only male student of his freshmen class. He traveled to Montana to purchase a cattle farm and then a mine operation, and after realizing that he couldn’t afford either, fell in love with the authentic west, drawing the people he would see on his travels. NIKI DE SAINT PHALLE (1930-2002) “Remember?” Serigraph

$2,900.00
Serigraph by French-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002) is titled “Remember?” and depicts various moments of intimacy with a couple paired with whimsical colorful figures. Noted for her experimental style of making art that incorporated whimsical, light-hearted elements, Saint Phalle presents an image of charged eroticism meant to explore the passions she held for her lover. Housed in a modest silver frame, this serigraph is signed by the artist at the right hand corner of the print in faded ink. About the Artist: Catherine Marie-Agnès Fal de Saint Phalle was born in 1930 near Paris to a French father and an American mother as the second of five children. She spent most of her childhood in New York City, and summers in Connecticut or Long Island, though she frequently returned to France to visit relatives, becoming fluent in both French and English. Working as a fashion model in her late teens, Saint Phalle appeared on the cover of Life Magazine and in the pages of Elle and Harper’s Bazaar, and eloped with Henry Matthews, an author and childhood friend, at the age of 18. While Matthews studied music at Harvard University, Saint Phalle began to explore painting, being encouraged to paint as a form of therapy. At the end of the 1950s, Saint Phalle and her husband moved back to Paris. In 1960, however, the couple separated and Saint Phalle moved to a new apartment, established a studio, and met artist Jean Tinguely, with whom she would collaborate artistically. Within a year, they had moved in together and begun a romantic relationship. Saint Phalle became part of the Nouveau Réalisme movement along with Tinguely, Yves Klein, Arman and others, being the only woman in the group. Her most famous and prolific series of works, the Nanas, were begun in the mid-1960s and were inspired by a friend's pregnancy, her reflections on archetypal feminine forms, and the vexed positions that women occupy in modern, patriarchal societies. 'Nanas,' a French slang word roughly equivalent to 'broads,' is a title that encapsulates the theme of the everywoman as well as the casual denigration that closely accompanies the rhetorical grouping of women as a social category. Saint Phalle became one of the first artists to get involved with the AIDS crisis, with the 1980s also serving as the the most prolific period in the Nanas series. Working at her art until the very end, Saint Phalle died in La Jolla, California in May of 2002 and has been immortalized as an artist that has had a significant effect on the development of conceptual art and feminism. $2,500.00
Circa 1977, hand signed, and numbered #6/10, a three color woodcut print on paper. Titled "Recent Research Reveals Location of World's Largest Fastest Food Franchise" this print is exemplary of Chafetz's use of humor to tackle politics. An emeritus professor of art, at the Ohio State University, one might recognize the landscape depicted below as the university's campus, a subject often explored in Chafetz's work. Framed with newspaper clipping attached on back. About the Artist: Sid Chafetz (1922-2013) was an artist and professor based in Columbus, Ohio. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, he attended Rhode Island School of Design before being drafted into the US Army in 1942. He returned after his service and graduated in 1947. He continued his education in France at L’Ecole Americaine des Beaux-Arts and the Acadãmie Julian, alongside artists Fernand Lãger and Stanley W. Hayter. Chafetz would then teach at The Ohio State University beginning in 1948, and was an active part of developing the printmaking program within the Department of Art. SALVADOR DALI “Our Lady of Annunciation” Wood Engraving from The Divine Comedy

$895.00 $716.00
“Our Lady of Annunciation” is inspired by Purgatory, Canto 10 from Dante’s Divine Comedy. A woman’s melancholy visage is a Surrealist take on portraiture. Mat in white and framed in gold with twist motif. Information on reverse.  This wood engraving print is taken from a collective book of Salvador Dali’s illustrations of Dante’s The Divine Comedy. Dali was commissioned by the Italian government in 1950  to create a complete work of these illustrations to commemorate the 700th anniversary of Dante’s birth. After much dispute amongst the government powers over Dali’s self-admitted questionable morality, the exhibition and commission were cancelled. Dali had already become obsessed with the concept, so he decided to work with French fine art publisher Joseph Forêt instead. In 1959, the limited edition books were published. In May of 1960, and exhibition of 100 original watercolors by Salvador Dali illustrated 12,000 verses from The Divine Comedy. About the Artist: Salvador Dali (1904-1989) was a surrealist painter best known for his melting clocks. Dali was born in Spain to a wealthy family who encouraged him to pursue art. He studied in Madrid and later relocated to France where he met Pablo Picasso. His painting's typically featured dream-like motifs as he believed that dreams and imagination should take precedence over marginal human thought. Salvador Dali is widely regarded as one of the most influential artists of the 20th-century. This engraving is just one of hundreds of pieces of art that are available at our location in Grandview!
