This lithograph, titled “Chauds Les Marrons” or “Hot Chestnuts”, by French artist Michel Delacroix (1933-) depicts an urban landscape covered in snow, the chimneys of the city spewing pillars of smoke into a grey sky while passersby brave the cold to frequent a street vendor selling chestnuts. A renowned painter of the “naif” or “naive” styling, Delacroix’s regular subject matter centers around the city of Paris; specifically the Paris of the 1940s. In the U.S. alone, Delacroix’s work has been showcased in over 300 exhibitions and in 1994, he was named an Official Artist of the Olympic Committee, furthering his already-prestigious career. Housed in a wood frame, this lithograph is plate signed by the artist along the lower left corner of the print and is heavily matted to better accentuate the urban beauty of Delacroix’s work.

RENÈ GRUAU (1909-2004) “Les Girls Suite” Limited Edition Signed Lithograph
This large, limited edition lithograph by visionary fashion illustrator René Gruau (1909-2004) comes from the “Les Girls Suite” collection, in which Gruau depicts female figures cloaking themselves against the printed background of the lithographic paper. Rendered in cyan, Gruau depicts this figure with a large hat, sensually looking over her shoulder at the viewer. Framed in a tall, fabric-wrapped frame with black trim, this lithograph is signed by Gruau in the lower right corner of the print.

About the Artist:
Born Renato Zavagli Ricciardelli delle Caminate in Rimini, Italy, in 1909, Gruau was the son of an Italian count and French aristocrat. Instead of following in his father's footsteps and accepting the job of a royal military commander, Gruau’s passion and inclination led him to a love and pursuit of fine arts, and he began supporting his mother by selling illustrations to fashion magazines at the age of fourteen. Gruau moved to the United States in 1948 to work for Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. He remained with the magazine for two years, before working as the sole illustrator for Flair. Influenced by Japanese woodblock prints and the simplified designs of Toulouse-Lautrec, Gruau created a style of elegance that has had a lasting effect on how fashion is illustrated today. Gruau's artwork is recognized and commended internationally in some of the world’s most prestigious art museums including the Louvre in Paris and the Blank in Italy. He passed away in 2004 in Rome, Italy at the age of 95.

At age 18, he won the Young Painter's Prize in a competition and his painting was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona for its permanent collection. After marrying his childhood sweetheart, Alvar moved to Paris, where he showed alongside other prestigious artists such as Picasso, Dali, and Miro. He became known by art collectors for original lithographs and exhibited regularly throughout the United States, Europe, Canada and Japan. After ten years in Paris, he returned to Spain where he has lived and worked out of his studio through the present. Alvar works in watercolor, oil, ceramics, engravings, sculpture, lithography, graphite drawings, murals and monuments.
