PATRICK NAGEL (1945-1984) “Park Place Estate” Silkscreen

$1,295.00 $1,165.50

Silkscreen by renowned artist and illustrator Patrick Nagel (1945-1984) depicts a female model against a stone blue background with gridded details. A female lion occupies the right hand foreground in a symbolic gesture of the central model’s depicted elegant ferocity. A widely collected artist, Nagel’s popular illustrations emphasize the female form in a distinctive, immediately recognizable style descended from Art Deco and Pop art. Posthumously released, this commemorative silkscreen is matted in a sleek, contemporary frame and signed and numbered by Nagel’s widow, Jennifer Dumas.

About the Artist:
Patrick Nagel was born November 25, 1945 in Dayton, Ohio, but was raised most of his life in the Los Angeles area. After serving in the United States Army with the 101st Airborne in Vietnam, Nagel attended the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles in 1969, and in that same year he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from California State University, Fullerton. Beginning in 1971, Nagel worked as a graphic designer for ABC Television before partaking in freelance work for companies and magazines such as IBM, Rolling Stone, and Universal Studios. Likewise, Nagel produced album covers for recording artists, most notably for Duran Duran’s 1982 hit album, Rio. Nagel contributed to Playboy Magazine from August 1975 to July 1984, with one of his paintings being published in every issue between that time period, roughly totaling 285 pieces. Nagel died of an undisclosed heart defect in 1984, at the young age of 38. His already popular work exploded throughout the 1980s and flooded the market to make Nagel a quintessential American artist still today.

JOHAN BARTHOLD JONGKIND (1819-1891) Original Oil Nightscape on Panel

$33,000.00 $26,400.00
Own a piece of art history with this original oil on panel painting by the illustrious Dutch master and frontrunner of Impressionism, Johan Barthold Jongkind (1819-1891). This painting on panel features a moonlit maritime scene that Jongkind is best known for. This painting is considered “nocturnally perfect” with radiating moonlight in a cloudy sky being perfectly reflected in the shimmering waters underneath. The low horizon, deep contrast in color, and loose yet intentional brushstrokes are quintessential to Jongkind’s style. In 1874, Jongkind was extended an invitation to participate in the first exhibition of Impressionist works at the Salon in Paris, but declined. Following the rejection of his painting “Moonlight in Rotterdam” at the 1873 Salon, he refused to participate in such exhibitions again. This exact painting was created in 1874, at that pivotal point in the Impressionist movement and in art history as a whole. This painted panel is framed in an aged gold frame with a paper label on the reverse. Jongkind’s signature and the year 1874 is found in the bottom left corner of the composition. About the Artist: Johan Bathold Jongkind (1819-1891) was a Dutch painter and printmaker who is widely recognized as a forefather of Impressionism. After training at the art academy in The Hague, he moved to Monparnasse, Paris. After studying and working for two years, he was accepted into the Paris Salon exhibition. Despite receiving praise from critics Charles Baudelaire and Emile Zola, he experienced little success that induced depression worsened by alcoholism. Jongkind would continue to struggle with his mental health and dependency issues throughout his life. He returned to Holland for 5 years before going back to Paris, renting a studio and developing a style that would be critical to the consequent Impressionist movement. He met  Eugène Boudin, Alfred Sisley, and Claude Monet, and became a mentor to the three young artists. Monet  attributed the “definitive education” of his artistic eye to Jongkind. Jongkind mostly focused on marine landscapes, consistently employing strong contrasts and lively brushwork. Following in Dutch tradition, most of his works feature a low horizon to emphasize the sky. His legacy is strong in both the art market and in museum collections around the world. Although his contemporaries admired his work and style, his distaste for social gatherings and salons may have been what prevented him from coming to the forefront of the Impressionist movement. However, his background contributions were equally as important to him personally and many other young artists.

SALVADOR DALI “The Smoke of Irascibility” Wood Engraving from The Divine Comedy

$895.00 $716.00
“The Smoke of Irascibility” is inspired by Purgatory, Canto 16 from Dante’s Divine Comedy. Two female figures with forlorn expressions directly face the viewer, with a third figure shrouded in shadows to the right. The two distinguishable figures hold each other for support. This work has a muted, grey palette. Mat in white and framed in rustic black. Information on reverse.  This wood engraving print is taken from a collective book of Salvador Dali’s illustrations of Dante’s The Divine Comedy. Dali was commissioned by the Italian government in 1950  to create a complete work of these illustrations to commemorate the 700th anniversary of Dante’s birth. After much dispute amongst the government powers over Dali’s self-admitted questionable morality, the exhibition and commission were cancelled. Dali had already become obsessed with the concept, so he decided to work with French fine art publisher Joseph Forêt instead. In 1959, the limited edition books were published. In May of 1960, and exhibition of 100 original watercolors by Salvador Dali illustrated 12,000 verses from The Divine Comedy. About the Artist: Salvador Dali (1904-1989) was a surrealist painter best known for his melting clocks. Dali was born in Spain to a wealthy family who encouraged him to pursue art. He studied in Madrid and later relocated to France where he met Pablo Picasso. His painting's typically featured dream-like motifs as he believed that dreams and imagination should take precedence over marginal human thought. Salvador Dali is widely regarded as one of the most influential artists of the 20th-century. This engraving is just one of hundreds of pieces of art that are available at our location in Grandview!
