ROSTISLAV LEBEDEV (1946-) “Roma III” Original Acrylic on Canvas

$15,000.00

Large scale, original acrylic on canvas by Russian contemporary artist Rostislav Lebedev (1946-) depicts a ferocious wolf paired against a bright blue backdrop, stars and traditional Russian architectural motifs intersecting the beast’s silhouette. Born in the former USSR, Lebedev’s work takes heavy inspiration from the western Pop Art movement of the 1960s to create paintings that are both culturally relevant to his home country, yet adaptable to a wider, international audience. Lebedev’s work reflects his political nature as a dissident nonconformist artist associated with the “Sots-Art” movement, directly protesting against the current state of Russia’s authoritarian regime. Mounted on the original stretcher bars, this original painting is signed, titled, and dated to 1993 by the artist on the reverse side of the canvas.

This painting is amongst hundreds of pieces of art that are available at our location in Grandview! Come in today and see the full collection.

RENÈ GRUAU (1909-2004) “Les Girls Suite” Limited Edition Signed Lithograph

$4,500.00
This large, limited edition lithograph by visionary fashion illustrator René Gruau (1909-2004) comes from the “Les Girls Suite” collection, in which Gruau depicts female figures cloaking themselves against the printed background of the lithographic paper. Rendered in cyan, Gruau depicts this figure with a large hat, sensually looking over her shoulder at the viewer. Framed in a tall, fabric-wrapped frame with black trim, this lithograph is signed by Gruau in the lower right corner of the print. Two other lithographs from this series are available, each sold separately. About the Artist: Born Renato Zavagli Ricciardelli delle Caminate in Rimini, Italy, in 1909, Gruau was the son of an Italian count and French aristocrat. Instead of following in his father's footsteps and accepting the job of a royal military commander, Gruau’s passion and inclination led him to a love and pursuit of fine arts, and he began supporting his mother by selling illustrations to fashion magazines at the age of fourteen. Gruau moved to the United States in 1948 to work for Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. He remained with the magazine for two years, before working as the sole illustrator for Flair. Influenced by Japanese woodblock prints and the simplified designs of Toulouse-Lautrec, Gruau created a style of elegance that has had a lasting effect on how fashion is illustrated today. Gruau's artwork is recognized and commended internationally in some of the world’s most prestigious art museums including the Louvre in Paris and the Blank in Italy. He passed away in 2004 in Rome, Italy at the age of 95. This lithograph is amongst hundreds of pieces of art that are available at our location in Grandview! KAREL APPEL (1921-2006) Signed Color Lithograph “Heads Everywhere”

SOLD
Color lithograph by famed Dutch artist Karel Appel (1921-2006) depicts an abstracted scene in tones of flesh pinks, reds, and blues and enveloped by black line work and wash. Appel’s postmodernist sensibility to this work creates a brutally beautiful piece of art to add to the collection. Titled “Heads Everywhere”, this lithograph was originally purchased on Broad Street at the Columbus branch of the Pace Gallery in the 1960s-1970s. Dated to 1958, this lithograph is framed in black and signed and numbered in pencil by Appel at the bottom of the print.  About the Artist: Karel Appel was born in 1921 in the Netherlands, completing his first painting at the age of fourteen and eventually studying at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. Appel had his first show in 1946 and joined CoBrA in 1948; a movement named by the Belgian poet Christian Dotremont from the initials of the members' home countries' capital cities: Copenhagen, Brussels, Amsterdam. Appel’s work displayed spontaneous picture language and childish techniques to conjure fascinating images. His 1949 fresco 'Questioning Children' was placed in Amsterdam City Hall and caused controversy for this reason, causing the work to be covered up for ten years. Appel became the most famous of the CoBrA artists, with shows extending to the United States and portraits of jazz greats Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie becoming subject matter. Appel suffered from a heart ailment and died in 2006 at his home in Zurich, Switzerland. This lithograph is amongst hundreds of pieces of art that are available at our location in Grandview! PU 4.14.23Circa 1977, hand signed, and numbered #6/10, a three color woodcut print on paper. Titled "Recent Research Reveals Location of World's Largest Fastest Food Franchise" this print is exemplary of Chafetz's use of humor to tackle politics. PETER MAX (1937-) “Better World Collage” Acrylic on Lithograph

$4,000.00
Original mixed media collage by renowned German-American Pop artist Peter Max (1937-) depicts a colorful rendering of a sunset bordered by abstract forms and gestural brushstrokes. Max’s signature psychedelic style has remained popular with collectors since he first began exhibiting in the early 1960’s. Crafted from painted acrylic on lithograph and framed in gold, this piece of fine art is signed by Max on the lower right hand side of the print. About the Artist: Peter Max Finkelstein was born on October 19, 1937 in Berlin, Germany. The son of German Jews, Max’s family fled Berlin a year after his birth and settled in Shanghai, China, where they lived for the next ten years. From there, his family moved to Israel and eventually westward, stopping in Paris for several months: an experience that Max would later credit to fostering his appreciation for art. Finally settling in Brooklyn, New York, Max began formal art training at the Art Students League of New York, eventually setting up a studio with his friend Tom Daly in 1962. Beginning work in advertising, Max’s usage in counter culture and psychedelic imagery quickly gained popularity, leading him to an appearance on The Tonight Show and designing cover art for Life Magazine. By 1974, Max was commissioned by the United State Postal Service to design a stamp commemorating the Expo ‘74 World’s Fair in Spokane, Washington, followed by the book, “Peter Max Paints America”, a commemoration of the United States Bicentennial. Along with many other pop culture projects and commissions, Max operated galleries throughout the world that sold his work and commercialized products. A modern icon of the Pop Art movement, Max currently resides in New York with his two adult children; his work continuing to remain popular with collectors and galleries alike. This collage is amongst hundreds of pieces of art that are available at our location in Grandview! Come in today and see the full collection.
