About the Artist:
Robert Martin (1918-1998) was born in Cleveland, Ohio and raised by his grandmother. His grandmother, having grown up in the Victorian Era, is responsible for the period's influence on his early works. Martin studied the painting from books of the masters, old and new. He worked from life, enjoying the process and interaction that was created. In the 1980s, he began working from photographs with his series of Victorian Village scenes. An ever-learning student, his work has distinctly different decades reflecting his progress and interests. Persisting was his use of oil on canvas, despite his training in other mediums. His poetic soul was evident in his philosophy as an artist.

About the Artist:
Juris Kakis is a Lativian born contemporary artist. He immigrated to the United States with his painter mother and medical doctor father at age 11. His first year in America, he received an award for his art in his new home of New York City. He attempted to continue the generational legacy of doctors that the men in his family had perpetuated, but ended up pursuing his Masters of Fine Arts instead. He went on to teach painting and drawing at Ohio Dominican University for 37 years before retiring as a professor with tenure.

PATRICIA BEATTY Large Mixed Media
Large mixed media art by Phoenix-based artist Patricia Beatty features a large abstract ground of jagged teal and fuchsia forms. Born and raised in the rural Midwest, Beatty did not have to look far for inspiration as she uses colors, patterns and textures found in nature to manifest her artwork. Beatty traces geometric configurations and patterns with thick applications of paint, creating an unusual texture to her intricate artwork. Housed in a painted wood frame with snakeskin matting, this large artwork is signed by the artist in the bottom corner of the piece.

KAREL APPEL (1921-2006) Signed Color Lithograph “Heads Everywhere”
Color lithograph by famed Dutch artist Karel Appel (1921-2006) depicts an abstracted scene in tones of flesh pinks, reds, and blues and enveloped by black line work and wash. Appel’s postmodernist sensibility to this work creates a brutally beautiful piece of art to add to the collection. Titled “Heads Everywhere”, this lithograph was originally purchased on Broad Street at the Columbus branch of the Pace Gallery in the 1960s-1970s. Dated to 1958, this lithograph is framed in black and signed and numbered in pencil by Appel at the bottom of the print.
About the Artist:
Karel Appel was born in 1921 in the Netherlands, completing his first painting at the age of fourteen and eventually studying at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. Appel had his first show in 1946 and joined CoBrA in 1948; a movement named by the Belgian poet Christian Dotremont from the initials of the members' home countries' capital cities: Copenhagen, Brussels, Amsterdam. Appel’s work displayed spontaneous picture language and childish techniques to conjure fascinating images. His 1949 fresco 'Questioning Children' was placed in Amsterdam City Hall and caused controversy for this reason, causing the work to be covered up for ten years. Appel became the most famous of the CoBrA artists, with shows extending to the United States and portraits of jazz greats Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie becoming subject matter. Appel suffered from a heart ailment and died in 2006 at his home in Zurich, Switzerland.

Combing painting with photography, Winfield uses a unique collaging process of incorporating a Cibachrome photographic print with original hand painting. A result which blends photorealism and stylization. Titled New Orleans Reflection, Winfield uses the window as the anchor of her composition, building from the photograph used as a reflection, and hand painting the environment housing it.
