DENNIS OPPENHEIM (1938-2011) “Tree House Structure on Poisoned Soil #3” Lithograph

$695.00 $556.00
This original lithograph by American conceptual artist Dennis Oppenheim (1938-2011) depicts the layout for Oppenheim’s “Tree House Structure on Poisoned Soil” project, in which small houses were built into sculptural trees. A pioneer of earthwork and conceptual art, Oppenheim’s versatile and prolific output often exasperated his critics, with works such as this lithograph providing an artwork that primarily exists in the mind of the viewer. Housed in a contemporary black frame, this original lithograph is signed, numbered 144/150, and dated to 1979 by Oppenheim in pencil.   About the Artist: Dennis Oppenheim (1938-2011) was born in Electric City, Washington to native Californian mother and a Russian immigrant father who worked as an engineer on the Grand Coulee Dam. Oppenheim’s family moved to the San Francisco Bay area and shortly thereafter, he attended the California College of Arts and Crafts, followed by an MFA from Stanford University in 1965. Oppenheim moved to New York City in 1966, working as a nursery and junior high art teacher while preparing to have his first solo show in 1968. A pioneer of earthwork and conceptualist art, Oppenheim’s versatility and stylistic shifts often caused exasperation amongst critics, who struggled to keep up with Oppenheim’s questioning of the nature of art and the definition of art. The subject of numerous texts and exhibitions, Oppenheim died in 2011 at the age of 72, working and living in a loft in Tribeca until his passing. WASSILY KANDINSKY (1866-1944) “Composition X” Original Lithograph on Handmade Paper

SOLD
Original lithograph on handmade paper by renowned Russian artist Wassily Kandinksy (1866-1944) depicts an abstracted composition of split planes and geometric forms. Generally regarded as the pioneer for abstraction in western art, Kandinsky’s work continues to be viewed favorably by museum curators and art historians for its expressive quality and masterful color treatments. Matted and housed in a handsome wooden frame, this original lithograph is dated to 1939 and sourced from an edition of 150. Unsigned by Kandinsky, this print still displays his unmistakable touch. About the Artist: Wassily Kandinsky was born in Moscow on December 16, 1866 to musical parents Lidia Ticheeva and Vasily Silvestrovich Kandinsky, a tea merchant. When Kandinsky was 5 years old, his parents divorced, and he moved to Odessa, where he learned to play the piano and cello in grammar school, studying drawing with a coach at this time as well. Although originally following his family’s wishes to study law, Kandinsky abandoned this career path after viewing an exhibition of French Impressionist paintings in Moscow, moving to Munich to pursue art full-time. Accepted into the prestigious Munich Academy of Art, Kandinsky’s studies were largely self-directed and after mastering traditional techniques of color and form, he set off on creating the more expressive, emotive works that would cement his legacy. Both world wars interfered with Kandinsky’s later career, and although he had achieved German citizenship, the Nazi regime labeled his work among the “degenerative arts”, with 57 of his works being confiscated. Fleeing to Neuilly-sur-Seine after Germany invaded France, Kandinsky lived a secluded life before dying in 1944 at the age of 77. Considered one of the pioneers of abstract art in the western art circles, Kandinsky continues to be a controversial and highly sought-out artist into the 21st century.   This lithograph is amongst hundreds of pieces of art that are available at our location in Grandview! PETER MAX (1937-) “Zero and Flowers” Color Lithograph

$2,900.00
Limited edition lithograph by renowned German-American Pop artist Peter Max (1937-) depicts a male figure surrounded by an interior of colorful florals. Titled, “Zero and Flowers” and dated to 1978, this print showcases Max’s signature psychedelic style that has remained popular with collectors since Max first began exhibiting in the early 1960’s. Framed in a painted grey frame, this lithograph is numbered 182/300 and is signed in pencil by Max on the lower right hand side of the paper. About the Artist: Peter Max Finkelstein was born on October 19, 1937 in Berlin, Germany. The son of German Jews, Max’s family fled Berlin a year after his birth and settled in Shanghai, China, where they lived for the next ten years. From there, his family moved to Israel and eventually westward, stopping in Paris for several months: an experience that Max would later credit to fostering his appreciation for art. Finally settling in Brooklyn, New York, Max began formal art training at the Art Students League of New York, eventually setting up a studio with his friend Tom Daly in 1962. Beginning work in advertising, Max’s usage in counter culture and psychedelic imagery quickly gained popularity, leading him to an appearance on The Tonight Show and designing cover art for Life Magazine. By 1974, Max was commissioned by the United State Postal Service to design a stamp commemorating the Expo ‘74 World’s Fair in Spokane, Washington, followed by the book, “Peter Max Paints America”, a commemoration of the United States Bicentennial. Along with many other pop culture projects and commissions, Max operated galleries throughout the world that sold his work and commercialized products. A modern icon of the Pop Art movement, Max currently resides in New York with his two adult children; his work continuing to remain popular with collectors and galleries alike.
