VICTOR VASARELY (1906-1997) “Quasar Zett” Offset Lithograph

This offset lithograph by Hungarian-French painter, Victor Vasarely (1906-1997), depicts an abstract field of interacting gradient blue trapezoidal designs against an undulating plane of red, blue, and white squares. Widely accepted as the grandfather of Op art, Vasarely utilized precise color and geometric compositions to create illusions of compelling spatial depth. This offset lithograph circa 1972 is housed in a contemporary silver frame and is unsigned by the artist.
About the Artist:
Victor Vasarely (1906-1997) was born in Pécs on April 9, 1906 and grew up in Pöstény and Budapest. Originally taking up medical studies, Vasarely abandoned medicine in 1927 to learn academic painting, studying at Sándor Bortnyik’s private art school, Műhely (or “Workshop”), then widely recognized as Budapest’s center of Bauhaus studies. After settling in Paris in 1930, Vasarely worked as a graphic artist before turning to creating art and sculptures using optical illusions. Developing his style of geometric abstract art over the next three decades, Vasarely widely became known as the founder and leader of the so-called “Op art” movement, with numerous museums and galleries collecting his work. After a long and successful career, Vasarely died in 1997, at the age of 90.

In May of 1960, and exhibition of 100 original watercolors by Salvador Dali illustrated 12,000 verses from The Divine Comedy.

About the Artist: André Masson(1896-1987) was born in Balagny-sur-Thérain, Oise and began to study art at the age of 11 at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, later moving his studies to Paris. Masson’s early work displayed an interest in Cubism, but he later became more closely associated with Surrealism, becoming more of the more enthusiastic advocates of automatic drawing; a practice in which the hand is allowed to move randomly across the paper or canvas. Under the German occupation of France, Masson was labeled a degenerate artist by the Nazi regime and he later moved away from Surrealism, adopting a more structured style with themes of eroticism and violence. After escaping France to America, Masson’s work became an important influence on burgeoning Abstract Expressionists, such as Jackson Pollock, as he worked in Connecticut. Following the war, he returned to France and continued to paint until his death in 1987 at the age of 91.
