NICODEMUS POTTERY 3 Piece “Nativity” Set of Ceramic Figures

$495.00
This set of ceramic sculptures by Nicodemus Pottery consists of figures of Mary and Jesus, Joseph, and a lamb to tenderly depict a scene from the classic nativity story. A lasting figure in the Columbus art scene, Chester Nicodemus (1901-1990) imbues gentle reverence onto the figures in this set, with each character bowing their heads in reverence or silently praying towards the newborn Christ child held in the Virgin Mary’s arms. Glazed in a glossy, translucent white, each figure in this set of ceramic sculptures is stamped with Nicodemus’ studio insignia along their underside, ensuring authenticity. About the Artist: Chester Nicodemus (1901-1990) was a Columbus, Ohio potter, sculptor, and teacher known for his small clay birds, as well as other wildlife, teapots and pitchers. His pieces are recognizable as being produced with variously colored translucent glazes, which enhanced the redness of the high iron content of Ohio clay to create a russet brown undertone. Nicodemus earned a degree from Cleveland Art School and then went on to teach at Dayton Art School and Wittenberg College. In 1932, he became dean at the Columbus College of Art and Design and later taught at Ohio State University and served as president of the Columbus Art League. All of Nicodemus' molds and glazes were destroyed upon his death at his request. This set of ceramics figures is amongst hundreds of pieces of art that are available at our location in Grandview! Vintage MARTZ POTTERY “Bird Bottle” Vase

$235.00
Crafted in 1970, this vintage “Bird Bottle” vase by Martz Pottery adds a wonderful piece of postmodern pottery to the tabletop décor. Glazed in white with earthy, washy tones wrapping around the body of the vase, this vase features two mouths that allow for a variety of floral arrangements.  About the Designer: Martz Pottery was created by husband and wife team Gordon and Jane Martz. They met while studying ceramics at Alfred University, married upon graduation, and moved to Jane’s hometown. Jane’s family owned Marshall Studios, a company that produced hand painted lampshades. As the company grew, their production expanded to creating turned wood lamp bases as well. Marshall Studios then changed generations to Jane’s parents, and the young artists were encouraged to contribute their talents. They devised a way to mass produce these pottery bases while still having handmade aesthetic and finishes. One of their lamps, Martz No. 101, was recognized by Edgar Kaufmann, Jr. who worked with the Museum of Modern Art. The lamp was selected to appear at the MoMA for their 1953 Good Design exhibit, which launched Marshall Studios and Martz Pottery’s popularity and sales. Once the Modernism trend declined, the company was sold and later closed. This vase is amongst hundreds of pieces of décor that are available at our location in Grandview!
