PATRICK NAGEL (1945-1984) “Commemorative #8” Silkscreen
Silkscreen by renowned artist and illustrator Patrick Nagel (1945-1984) depicts a female figure against a stone blue background. The figure casts a sultry expression and is dressed in an oversized, pale yellow sweater with arms raised to sensually frame the image. Posthumously released for Tower Graphics of Sacramento, California, this commemorative silkscreen is matted and housed in a sleek, contemporary frame and is unsigned.
About the Artist:
Patrick Nagel was born November 25, 1945 in Dayton, Ohio, but was raised most of his life in the Los Angeles area. After serving in the United States Army with the 101st Airborne in Vietnam, Nagel attended the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles in 1969, and in that same year he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from California State University, Fullerton. Beginning in 1971, Nagel worked as a graphic designer for ABC Television before partaking in freelance work for companies and magazines such as IBM, Rolling Stone, and Universal Studios. Likewise, Nagel produced album covers for recording artists, most notably for Duran Duran’s 1982 hit album, Rio. Nagel contributed to Playboy Magazine from August 1975 to July 1984, with one of his paintings being published in every issue between that time period, roughly totaling 285 pieces. Nagel died of an undisclosed heart defect in 1984, at the young age of 38. His already popular work exploded throughout the 1980s and flooded the market to make Nagel a quintessential American artist still today.

NIKI DE SAINT PHALLE (1930-2002) “Remember?” Serigraph
Serigraph by French-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002) is titled “Remember?” and depicts various moments of intimacy with a couple paired with whimsical colorful figures. Noted for her experimental style of making art that incorporated whimsical, light-hearted elements, Saint Phalle presents an image of charged eroticism meant to explore the passions she held for her lover. Housed in a modest silver frame, this serigraph is signed by the artist at the right hand corner of the print in faded ink.
About the Artist:
Catherine Marie-Agnès Fal de Saint Phalle was born in 1930 near Paris to a French father and an American mother as the second of five children. She spent most of her childhood in New York City, and summers in Connecticut or Long Island, though she frequently returned to France to visit relatives, becoming fluent in both French and English. Working as a fashion model in her late teens, Saint Phalle appeared on the cover of Life Magazine and in the pages of Elle and Harper’s Bazaar, and eloped with Henry Matthews, an author and childhood friend, at the age of 18. While Matthews studied music at Harvard University, Saint Phalle began to explore painting, being encouraged to paint as a form of therapy. At the end of the 1950s, Saint Phalle and her husband moved back to Paris. In 1960, however, the couple separated and Saint Phalle moved to a new apartment, established a studio, and met artist Jean Tinguely, with whom she would collaborate artistically. Within a year, they had moved in together and begun a romantic relationship. Saint Phalle became part of the Nouveau Réalisme movement along with Tinguely, Yves Klein, Arman and others, being the only woman in the group. Her most famous and prolific series of works, the Nanas, were begun in the mid-1960s and were inspired by a friend's pregnancy, her reflections on archetypal feminine forms, and the vexed positions that women occupy in modern, patriarchal societies. 'Nanas,' a French slang word roughly equivalent to 'broads,' is a title that encapsulates the theme of the everywoman as well as the casual denigration that closely accompanies the rhetorical grouping of women as a social category. Saint Phalle became one of the first artists to get involved with the AIDS crisis, with the 1980s also serving as the the most prolific period in the Nanas series. Working at her art until the very end, Saint Phalle died in La Jolla, California in May of 2002 and has been immortalized as an artist that has had a significant effect on the development of conceptual art and feminism.

JAMES PRADIER (1790-1852) “La Toilette d’Atalante” Bronze Sculpture
Bronze sculpture by French artist James Pradier (1790-1852) depicts the Arcadian heroine Atalanta, a huntress who was allied with the goddess Artemis. From mythology, Atalanta would agree to marry the suitor that could outrun her. If they were to fail, however, they would be put to death. Praidier’s historical reputation as a most competent artist is exhibited on full display with this gorgeous neoclassical sculpture. This figure of Atalanta kneels against a base denoting Pradier’s signature and the Susse Foundry seal, offering a beautiful rendition of Pradier’s original marble masterpiece.
About the Artist:
Born Jean Jacques Pradier in the Republic of Geneva in 1790, James Pradier moved to Paris in 1807 for work before studying at the École des Beaux-Arts beginning in 1808. He won a Prix de Rome that enabled him to study in Rome from 1814 to 1818 at the Villa Medici and made his debut at the Salon in 1819, quickly acquiring a reputation as a talented artist. In 1827, he became a member of the Académie des beaux-arts and a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Pradier oversaw the finish of his sculptures himself and his workshop served as a meeting place for the artists of Paris. Pradier continued to work until his death in 1852, after which the contents of his studio were purchased by the city museum of Geneva.
