NICODEMUS “Mr. Duck” Squatting Circa 1960

Glazed in a flat black-brown, this squatting “Mr. Duck” was made by Nicodemus circa 1960. Glossy black eyes and a yellow beak pop against the muted finish on the duckling.  About the Artist: Chester Nicodemus (1901-1990) was a Columbus, Ohio potter, sculptor, and teacher known for his small clay birds, as well as other wildlife, teapots and pitchers. His pieces are recognizable as being produced with variously colored translucent glazes, which enhanced the redness of the high iron content of Ohio clay to create a russet brown undertone. Nicodemus earned a degree from Cleveland Art School and then went on to teach at Dayton Art School and Wittenberg College. In 1932, he became dean  at the Columbus College of Art and Design and later taught at Ohio State University and served as president of the Columbus Art League. Large carved figure by German Village artist Martin Tischler circa 1970 is smoothly styled in the form of a woman, draped in cloth with a short, blunt haircut. Tischler was a woodworker based in German Village, Columbus and was the son of Rookwood Pottery artist Vera Tischler. A medium-light finish has a satin gloss, highlighting the wood grain. Artist proof print titled “Processional” by artist Sid Chafetz dated 1959 depicts four collegiates with “medio tutissimus ibis” emblazoned in red on a large flag behind them. Framed in black.  About the Artist: Sid Chafetz (1922-?) was an artist and professor based in Columbus, Ohio. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, he attended Rhode Island School of Design before being drafted into the US Army in 1942. He returned after his service and graduated in 1947. He continued his education in France at L’Ecole Americaine des Beaux-Arts and the Acadãmie Julian, alongside artists Fernand Lãger and Stanley W. Hayter. Chafetz would then teach at The Ohio State University beginning in 1948, and was an active part of developing the printmaking program within the Department of Art. He retired from teaching in 1982 to focus on his own art. A wondrous study of light by Donald Dodrill, this original watercolor painting by Columbus, Ohio illustrates a scene of the historic Columbus neighborhood of German Village. Bright sunlight dissipates through tall green trees against a classic brick home and a lush green yard surrounded by a wrought iron fence.  About the Artist: Donald Dodrill (1922-2017) was a artist and educator who spent most of his life in Columbus, Ohio. He was born in Delaware County and attended Marion Business School, where he would meet his future wife and business partner Winifred. He received his first opportunity to work in commercial art before being drafted into the US Army and was deployed for 33 months. After returning home, he attended the Ohio State University and received his BA in Fine Arts. He then started his career in commercial art and advertising, partnering with his now wife from 1954-1999 to form a commercial art and advertising studio called Dodrill Design. In 1974 he earned his MFA from Syracuse University and began teaching graphic design part time at Capital University while he had the role of Director of Windon Art Gallery, managed by his wife Win. He was a charter member of the Ohio Watercolor Society, a lifetime member of the Central Ohio Watercolor Society, and a signature member of the American and National Watercolor Societies. He and Win published an art book featuring 150 of his watercolor paintings in 1989. Passionate about watercolor techniques and his community, Don taught painting and drawing classes in Upper Arlington, serving on the Upper Arlington Cultural Arts Commission and elected in 1996 as UA’s First Honored Community Artist. Babblement is an original watercolor by Columbus, Ohio artist David Schackne. Busy in both color and composition, this landscape features tones of green, blue, red, orange, and yellow with strikes of black throughout. Signed on bottom and titled on reverse.  About the Artist: David Schackne (1923-2004) was an architect who designed many of Columbus's public high schools. As a teenager he studied at Columbus Art School (now CCAD) and would graduate from Ohio State University with a degree in architecture. Attributed to American artist Marques Reitzel(1896-1963), an original oil on canvas of an autumn landscape. Nationally exhibited across the country, Reitzel was recognized for his landscapes of the North American terrain, from sprawling farm lands to snow engulfed creeks. After serving in WWII, Reitzel received his Ph.D at The Ohio State University, and would go on to be an educator in San Jose until his retirement in 1956.
