Set of 12 ANDY WARHOL (1928-1987) “Cars” Limited Edition Mercedes Benz Calendar Set
Thought to be the last project Andy Warhol (1928-1987) worked on before his untimely death in 1987, this collection of “Cars” prints was posthumously released as a calendar by Mercedes-Benz. Mercedes-Benz commissioned Warhol to recreate their iconic cars over their history in his famous “Pop Art” styling and while the project was never fully completed, enough source material was provided to comprise this collection of calendar prints. Initially debuted in Tuebingen, West Germany in 1988, the original set of prints went on to exhibit in Japan and Europe before becoming a part of the Daimler-Benz art collection at the Stuttgart headquarters. True collector’s pieces, each print in this limited edition set of twelve is housed in a high quality metallic frame and is unsigned by the artist.
About the Artist:
Andy Warhol (born Andrew Warhola) was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on August 6th, 1928, the son of Rusyn immigrants from Slovakia. After graduating from the Carnegie Institute of Technology, Warhol moved to New York City, where he worked as a successful commercial illustrator for roughly a decade. Warhol began painting in the late 1950s and by 1963, he was mass-producing purposely banal images of consumer goods and celebrities by means of photographic silkscreen prints in a movement known as “Pop Art”. The late 1960s for Warhol included his rise to celebrity in his own right, and he began making underground films that are recognized as avant-garde cinema. An assassination attempt in 1968 saw Warhol retreat from the open studio and focus on more commercial means of production throughout the 1970s and 1980s. One of Warhol’s last major collaborations was with the young American painter Jean-Michel Basquiat, with whom he produced a body of work in 1984. Warhol remained active until his death in February of 1987 and he is celebrated as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century.

KAREL APPEL (1921-2006) “Images” Original Serigraph
This original serigraph by famed Dutch artist Karel Appel (1921-2006) depicts an abstracted portrait of a figure peering out towards the viewer with wide eyes. Renowned for his vision of expressing form through spontaneity and intensity, Appel’s postmodernist sensibilities resolve in this fine print to offer a gorgeous addition to the contemporary art collection. This lithograph is housed in a metallic silver frame and is unsigned by the artist, complete with a certificate of authenticity from Park West Galleries.
About the Artist:
Karel Appel was born in 1921 in the Netherlands, completing his first painting at the age of fourteen and eventually studying at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. Appel had his first show in 1946 and joined CoBrA in 1948; a movement named by the Belgian poet Christian Dotremont from the initials of the members' home countries' capital cities: Copenhagen, Brussels, Amsterdam. Appel’s work displayed spontaneous picture language and childish techniques to conjure fascinating images. His 1949 fresco 'Questioning Children' was placed in Amsterdam City Hall and caused controversy for this reason, causing the work to be covered up for ten years. Appel became the most famous of the CoBrA artists, with shows extending to the United States and portraits of jazz greats Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie becoming subject matter. Appel suffered from a heart ailment and died in 2006 at his home in Zurich, Switzerland.
