A pioneer of earthwork and conceptual art, Oppenheim’s versatile and prolific output often exasperated his critics, with works such as this lithograph providing an artwork that primarily exists in the mind of the viewer. Housed in a contemporary black frame, this original lithograph is signed, numbered 144/150, and dated to 1979 by Oppenheim in pencil.   About the Artist: Dennis Oppenheim (1938-2011) was born in Electric City, Washington to native Californian mother and a Russian immigrant father who worked as an engineer on the Grand Coulee Dam. Oppenheim’s family moved to the San Francisco Bay area and shortly thereafter, he attended the California College of Arts and Crafts, followed by an MFA from Stanford University in 1965. Oppenheim moved to New York City in 1966, working as a nursery and junior high art teacher while preparing to have his first solo show in 1968. A pioneer of earthwork and conceptualist art, Oppenheim’s versatility and stylistic shifts often caused exasperation amongst critics, who struggled to keep up with Oppenheim’s questioning of the nature of art and the definition of art. The subject of numerous texts and exhibitions, Oppenheim died in 2011 at the age of 72, working and living in a loft in Tribeca until his passing.
