ROBERT MARTIN (1918-1998) Original Oil on Canvas “Construction Vehicles”

$495.00
Original oil on canvas by Ohio-based artist Robert Martin (1918-1998) depicts a worker amongst construction vehicles, a darkened sky formed overhead. An almost surrealist image, Martin’s loose, washy brushwork creates a scene that should be commonplace, yet somehow feels unsettling and in motion. A darker, earthy palette intermingles with the yellows and reds of the vehicles to create a truly modern piece of art. Housed in a white frame, this painting is signed by Martin in the lower right corner of the painting. About the Artist: Robert Martin (1918-1998) was born in Cleveland, Ohio and raised by his grandmother. His grandmother, having grown up in the Victorian Era, is responsible for the period’s influence on his early works. Martin studied the painting from books of the masters, old and new. He worked from life, enjoying the process and interaction that was created. In the 1980s, he began working from photographs with his series of Victorian Village scenes. An ever-learning student, his work has distinctly different decades reflecting his progress and interests. Persisting was his use of oil on canvas, despite his training in other mediums. His poetic soul was evident in his philosophy as an artist.  This painting is amongst hundreds of pieces of art that are available at our location in Grandview! ANDRÉ MASSON (1896-1987) Signed and Numbered Lithograph

$1,200.00

An original signed and numbered lithograph by famed French artist André Masson (1896-1987) reminiscent of Masson’s works in automatic drawing. Featuring graphic marks on a vivid ground of red, blue, yellow, and green, Masson’s surrealistic mark-making invites viewers to investigate the image and form their own meaning within the piece. Framed in silver and signed and numbered at the bottom.

About the Artist: André Masson(1896-1987) was born in Balagny-sur-Thérain, Oise and began to study art at the age of 11 at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, later moving his studies to Paris. Masson’s early work displayed an interest in Cubism, but he later became more closely associated with Surrealism, becoming more of the more enthusiastic advocates of automatic drawing; a practice in which the hand is allowed to move randomly across the paper or canvas. Under the German occupation of France, Masson was labeled a degenerate artist by the Nazi regime and he later moved away from Surrealism, adopting a more structured style with themes of eroticism and violence. After escaping France to America, Masson’s work became an important influence on burgeoning Abstract Expressionists, such as Jackson Pollock, as he worked in Connecticut.  Following the war, he returned to France and continued to paint until his death in 1987 at the age of 91.
