Dated vintage circa the 1960s, this figurine from Royal Copenhagen was originally crafted by Danish painter and sculptor Knud Kyhn (1880-1969) and depicts a playful scene of a boy wrestling with a small bear. This ceramic bowl by American potters Edwin (1910-2008) and Mary Scheier (1910-2007) offers a stylized representation of a classic Biblical parable, depicting the prophet Jonah resting in the belly of a large fish. Revered as central figures behind the American pottery revival that comprised part of the mid-century modern design movement, the Scheiers worked independently and collaboratively, producing award-winning work over a number of decades at their studio in Durham, New Hampshire. This modest, yet inspiring bowl is crafted with an earthy, dark gradient glaze and has been signed on its underside by the artists.

NICODEMUS POTTERY 3 Piece “Nativity” Set of Ceramic Figures
This set of ceramic sculptures by Nicodemus Pottery consists of figures of Mary and Jesus, Joseph, and a lamb to tenderly depict a scene from the classic nativity story. A lasting figure in the Columbus art scene, Chester Nicodemus (1901-1990) imbues gentle reverence onto the figures in this set, with each character bowing their heads in reverence or silently praying towards the newborn Christ child held in the Virgin Mary’s arms. Glazed in a glossy, translucent white, each figure in this set of ceramic sculptures is stamped with Nicodemus’ studio insignia along their underside, ensuring authenticity.
About the Artist:
Chester Nicodemus (1901-1990) was a Columbus, Ohio potter, sculptor, and teacher known for his small clay birds, as well as other wildlife, teapots and pitchers. His pieces are recognizable as being produced with variously colored translucent glazes, which enhanced the redness of the high iron content of Ohio clay to create a russet brown undertone. Nicodemus earned a degree from Cleveland Art School and then went on to teach at Dayton Art School and Wittenberg College. In 1932, he became dean at the Columbus College of Art and Design and later taught at Ohio State University and served as president of the Columbus Art League. All of Nicodemus' molds and glazes were destroyed upon his death at his request.

This ceramic ornament is glazed in a glossy, translucent green and has been stamped and affixed with Nicodemus’ studio insignia en verso, ensuring its authenticity.
About the Artist:
