About the Designer: Born in Oswego, Illinois in 1907, Edward Wormley studied at the New York School of Interior Design via correspondence while still a high school student. He continued his studies at the Art Institute of Chicago between 1926 and 1928 before embarking on a tour of Europe, where he met Le Corbusier and Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann. In the 1930’s, Wormley began working as a designer for the Dunbar Furniture Company in Berne, Indiana, where his popular designs saw him quickly installed as the company’s design director. In charge of updating Dunbar’s furniture lines, Wormley advocated for the mid century Modernist aesthetic and incorporated modern innovations into traditional designs. During his four decades with Dunbar, he designed 150 pieces, and had work included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Boston Museum of Art, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Wormley’s honors included the Designer of Distinction from the American Society of Interior Directors in 1982 and the Distinguished Designer Award from the American Society of Furniture Designers in 1986, among others.
