RENÈ GRUAU (1909-2004) “Les Girls Suite” Limited Edition Signed Lithograph
This large, limited edition lithograph by visionary fashion illustrator René Gruau (1909-2004) comes from the “Les Girls Suite” collection, in which Gruau depicts female figures cloaking themselves against the printed background of the lithographic paper. Rendered in cyan, Gruau depicts this figure with a large hat, sensually looking over her shoulder at the viewer. Framed in a tall, fabric-wrapped frame with black trim, this lithograph is signed by Gruau in the lower right corner of the print.

About the Artist:
Born Renato Zavagli Ricciardelli delle Caminate in Rimini, Italy, in 1909, Gruau was the son of an Italian count and French aristocrat. Instead of following in his father's footsteps and accepting the job of a royal military commander, Gruau’s passion and inclination led him to a love and pursuit of fine arts, and he began supporting his mother by selling illustrations to fashion magazines at the age of fourteen. Gruau moved to the United States in 1948 to work for Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. He remained with the magazine for two years, before working as the sole illustrator for Flair. Influenced by Japanese woodblock prints and the simplified designs of Toulouse-Lautrec, Gruau created a style of elegance that has had a lasting effect on how fashion is illustrated today. Gruau's artwork is recognized and commended internationally in some of the world’s most prestigious art museums including the Louvre in Paris and the Blank in Italy. He passed away in 2004 in Rome, Italy at the age of 95.

PETER MAX (1937-) “Better World Collage” Acrylic on Lithograph
Original mixed media collage by renowned German-American Pop artist Peter Max (1937-) depicts a colorful rendering of a sunset bordered by abstract forms and gestural brushstrokes. Max’s signature psychedelic style has remained popular with collectors since he first began exhibiting in the early 1960’s. Crafted from painted acrylic on lithograph and framed in gold, this piece of fine art is signed by Max on the lower right hand side of the print.
About the Artist:
Peter Max Finkelstein was born on October 19, 1937 in Berlin, Germany. The son of German Jews, Max’s family fled Berlin a year after his birth and settled in Shanghai, China, where they lived for the next ten years. From there, his family moved to Israel and eventually westward, stopping in Paris for several months: an experience that Max would later credit to fostering his appreciation for art. Finally settling in Brooklyn, New York, Max began formal art training at the Art Students League of New York, eventually setting up a studio with his friend Tom Daly in 1962. Beginning work in advertising, Max’s usage in counter culture and psychedelic imagery quickly gained popularity, leading him to an appearance on The Tonight Show and designing cover art for Life Magazine. By 1974, Max was commissioned by the United State Postal Service to design a stamp commemorating the Expo ‘74 World’s Fair in Spokane, Washington, followed by the book, “Peter Max Paints America”, a commemoration of the United States Bicentennial. Along with many other pop culture projects and commissions, Max operated galleries throughout the world that sold his work and commercialized products. A modern icon of the Pop Art movement, Max currently resides in New York with his two adult children; his work continuing to remain popular with collectors and galleries alike.

Vintage VERVE Magazine No. 4 PICASSO Circa 1951
Specifically designed front and back cover by Picasso for this edition of Verve Magazine, this issue is completely dedicated to the oeuvre of the artist. Made in Vallauris, Paris, each page was produced through a lithograph, heliogravure and quadrichromia printing process by Draeger Frerés to create vivid documentation of Picasso's work. Due to the nature of the publication, many were discarded through the years, leaving this highly sought after and desirable. Because of the age of the magazine, this copy contains damage and tears throughout.

JIM BUCKELS (1948-) Serigraph “New Order” – Signed
Serigraph by American contemporary painter and printmaker Jim Buckels (1948-) depicts a dreamlike image of a modern house against a blue night sky. Titled “New Order”, a tree juts into the viewer’s space, obscuring the clear night sky while the architecture of the composition leads the viewer to adjacent stairs and archways, and further, into rolling hills against a body of water. Combing painting with photography, Winfield uses a unique collaging process of incorporating a Cibachrome photographic print with original hand painting. A result which blends photorealism and stylization. BLAS OLLEROS Y QUINTANA (1851-1919) Original Oil on Canvas Painting – Signed
Original oil on canvas by noted 19th century Spanish painter Blas Olleros y Quintana (1851-1919) depicts a harbor scene. Six female figures drift in a boat ornamented with verdure and paper lanterns while other boaters wave in the distance; a perfect example of Olleros' appeal towards scenes of leisure and celebration. Housed in an ornate gold frame and crowned with a museum light, this opulent painting is signed by Olleros in the lower right corner of the painting.
About the Artist:
Blas Olleros y Quintana was born in 1851 in Avila, Spain. By 1874, the Avila City Council awarded Olleros a grant to further his art education in Rome. After completing his studies in Rome, Olleros relocated to Paris for three years, becoming acquainted with the Spanish portrait painter Palmaroli, who became a great influence on his work. For much of the 1880’s Olleros resided in Naples, Italy, where he became known as “Il Improvvisatore” or, “The Improviser”. He adopted Italy as his new homeland and remained there for most of his adult life. His subject matter was varied and included landscapes, seascapes, figures, genre and historical scenes. A great deal of his work focused on Neapolitan scenery, especially harbor scenes. He later resided in Florence and died there in 1919.

After CHARLES M. RUSSELL(1864-1926) “Man with Rifle” Bronze Sculpture
Cast from original molds by American artist Charles M. Russell (1864-1926), this bronze sculpture depicts a man holding a rifle that he steadies with the usage of a deadened tree stump. Typical of the wild western imagery that Russell exemplifies, a steer’s skull rests at the man’s feet. Russell’s cast signature is displayed at the base of the sculpture.
About the Artist:
Charles Marion Russell was born on March 19th, 1864 in St. Louis, Missouri and grew up with an avid fascination of the ‘wild west’ in his early years, eventually becoming a sheep rancher in Montana. Starting off as a cowboy, Russell began to document the winter of 1886-1887 in watercolors, which launched his career as an artist. His wife, Nancy, is often credited in helping him attain international acclaim as an artist, setting up shows throughout the United States and abroad. Russell produced about 4000 works of art, including oil and watercolor paintings, drawings and sculptures in wax, clay, plaster and other materials, some of which were also cast in bronze. He died in 1926 in the county seat of Great Falls, Montana.

DARIO CAMPANILE “The Offering” Limited Edition Lithograph – Signed
Limited edition lithograph from noted Italian-American artist Dario Campanile (1948-) titled, “The Offering” depicts a nude female figure at rest as a large tiger approaches her. She is draped in a pink fabric and a small kitten nestles between her and the paw of the great tiger. The scene takes inspiration from surrealist imagery, placed in a stunning landscape of greenery and a waterfall in the background. The figures float on a thin platform, giving this piece a dreamlike feel. Campanile’s work often ranges from the representational to the abstract. He is noteworthy as the artist who created Paramount Pictures’ 75th anniversary logo utilized in most films and publications by the studio in the 1980’s. ROCKWELL KENT (1882-1971) ‘Flame’ Original Woodcut
An original woodcut print from American artist Rockwell Kent (1882-1971) titled “The Bather’ from a 1937 American Block Print Calendar with documentation of the calendar on the back of frame. Each illustration by a notable artist was printed separately so that it could be framed. Image features a heroic figure in the foreground against a large, stark white flame, mountains in the distance. This piece is a prime example of Kent’s recurring theme and interest in mysticism.
About the Artist: Rockwell Kent (1882-1971) was born in Tarrytown, New York and was interested in art from a young age. His family’s financial standings prevented him from pursuing a career in fine arts and consequently, he completed a Bachelor of Arts in architecture at Columbia University. While primarily focusing on scenes of nature, Kent’s figurative works often contain mystical themes such as heroism and isolation. Around 1920, Kent began making woodcuts, establishing himself as one of the most prominent early American Modernists. Kent eventually left the New York art world, his time spent more on progressive political causes such as worker’s rights and preventing the spread of fascism in Europe. Later in his life, Kent found new popularity in the Soviet Union and in 1960, he donated 880 prints, drawings, and paintings to the people of the Soviet Union. Kent died of a heart attack in 1971 and was buried at Asgard, his farm in New York.

ANDRÉ MASSON (1896-1987) Signed and Numbered Lithograph
An original signed and numbered lithograph by famed French artist André Masson (1896-1987) reminiscent of Masson’s works in automatic drawing. Featuring graphic marks on a vivid ground of red, blue, yellow, and green, Masson’s surrealistic mark-making invites viewers to investigate the image and form their own meaning within the piece. Framed in silver and signed and numbered at the bottom.
About the Artist: André Masson(1896-1987) was born in Balagny-sur-Thérain, Oise and began to study art at the age of 11 at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, later moving his studies to Paris. Masson’s early work displayed an interest in Cubism, but he later became more closely associated with Surrealism, becoming more of the more enthusiastic advocates of automatic drawing; a practice in which the hand is allowed to move randomly across the paper or canvas. Under the German occupation of France, Masson was labeled a degenerate artist by the Nazi regime and he later moved away from Surrealism, adopting a more structured style with themes of eroticism and violence. After escaping France to America, Masson’s work became an important influence on burgeoning Abstract Expressionists, such as Jackson Pollock, as he worked in Connecticut. Following the war, he returned to France and continued to paint until his death in 1987 at the age of 91.

SALVADOR DALI “The Proud” Wood Engraving from The Divine Comedy
“The Proud” is inspired by Purgatory, Canto 11 from Dante’s Divine Comedy. Figures with Surrealist styling illustrate this piece of the epic with earthen tones for a solemn look with rusty warmth. Mat in white and framed in textured brown. Information on reverse.
This wood engraving print is taken from a collective book of Salvador Dali’s illustrations of Dante’s The Divine Comedy. Dali was commissioned by the Italian government in 1950 to create a complete work of these illustrations to commemorate the 700th anniversary of Dante’s birth. After much dispute amongst the government powers over Dali’s self-admitted questionable morality, the exhibition and commission were cancelled. Dali had already become obsessed with the concept, so he decided to work with French fine art publisher Joseph Forêt instead. In 1959, the limited edition books were published. In May of 1960, and exhibition of 100 original watercolors by Salvador Dali illustrated 12,000 verses from The Divine Comedy.
About the Artist:
Salvador Dali (1904-1989) was a surrealist painter best known for his melting clocks. Dali was born in Spain to a wealthy family who encouraged him to pursue art. He studied in Madrid and later relocated to France where he met Pablo Picasso. His painting's typically featured dream-like motifs as he believed that dreams and imagination should take precedence over marginal human thought. Salvador Dali is widely regarded as one of the most influential artists of the 20th-century.
