CHARLEY HARPER (1922-2007) “Raccrobat” Lithograph

SOLD

Original lithograph by Cincinnati-based artist Charley Harper (1922-2007) depicts a raccoon and butterfly set in a dynamic, mirrored pose, a signature example of Harper’s whimsical take on nature portraits. Titled, “Raccrobat”, this piece is rendered in simple, geometric forms that compose a highly modern aesthetic for the collection. Housed in a stylish, metallic frame with faux distressing, this original lithograph is signed in pencil by Harper at the bottom of the paper.

About the Artist:
Charley Harper was born on August 4, 1922 in Frenchton, West Virginia and grew up on a family farm, which would later influence his interest in the natural world and animals. He studied art at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, where he won the academy’s first Stephen H. Wilder Traveling Scholarship and met artist Edie McKee, who he would marry shortly after graduation in 1947. Harper returned to the Art Academy of Cincinnati as a teacher and also worked for a commercial firm before pursuing freelance work at Harper Studios, formed by he, Edie, and their only child, Brett. During his career, he illustrated numerous books, as well as many prints, posters, and other works. Harper also created works for many nature-based organizations, among them the National Park Service, Cincinnati Zoo, Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and the Everglades National Park. He died in Cincinnati, Ohio on June 10, 2007, at the age of 84.

RENÈ GRUAU (1909-2004) “Les Girls Suite” Limited Edition Signed Lithograph

$4,500.00
This large, limited edition lithograph by visionary fashion illustrator René Gruau (1909-2004) comes from the “Les Girls Suite” collection, in which Gruau depicts female figures cloaking themselves against the printed background of the lithographic paper. Rendered in yellow, Gruau depicts this nude figure in a turban, sensually locking eyes with the viewer. Framed in a tall, fabric-wrapped frame with black trim, this lithograph is signed by Gruau in the lower right corner of the print. Two other lithographs from this series are available, each sold separately. About the Artist: Born Renato Zavagli Ricciardelli delle Caminate in Rimini, Italy, in 1909, Gruau was the son of an Italian count and French aristocrat. Instead of following in his father's footsteps and accepting the job of a royal military commander, Gruau’s passion and inclination led him to a love and pursuit of fine arts, and he began supporting his mother by selling illustrations to fashion magazines at the age of fourteen. Gruau moved to the United States in 1948 to work for Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. He remained with the magazine for two years, before working as the sole illustrator for Flair. Influenced by Japanese woodblock prints and the simplified designs of Toulouse-Lautrec, Gruau created a style of elegance that has had a lasting effect on how fashion is illustrated today. Gruau's artwork is recognized and commended internationally in some of the world’s most prestigious art museums including the Louvre in Paris and the Blank in Italy. He passed away in 2004 in Rome, Italy at the age of 95. This lithograph is amongst hundreds of pieces of art that are available at our location in Grandview! DENNIS OPPENHEIM (1938-2011) “Tree House Structure on Poisoned Soil #3” Lithograph

$695.00 $625.50
This original lithograph by American conceptual artist Dennis Oppenheim (1938-2011) depicts the layout for Oppenheim’s “Tree House Structure on Poisoned Soil” project, in which small houses were built into sculptural trees. A pioneer of earthwork and conceptual art, Oppenheim’s versatile and prolific output often exasperated his critics, with works such as this lithograph providing an artwork that primarily exists in the mind of the viewer. Housed in a contemporary black frame, this original lithograph is signed, numbered 144/150, and dated to 1979 by Oppenheim in pencil.   About the Artist: Dennis Oppenheim (1938-2011) was born in Electric City, Washington to native Californian mother and a Russian immigrant father who worked as an engineer on the Grand Coulee Dam. Oppenheim’s family moved to the San Francisco Bay area and shortly thereafter, he attended the California College of Arts and Crafts, followed by an MFA from Stanford University in 1965. Oppenheim moved to New York City in 1966, working as a nursery and junior high art teacher while preparing to have his first solo show in 1968. A pioneer of earthwork and conceptualist art, Oppenheim’s versatility and stylistic shifts often caused exasperation amongst critics, who struggled to keep up with Oppenheim’s questioning of the nature of art and the definition of art. The subject of numerous texts and exhibitions, Oppenheim died in 2011 at the age of 72, working and living in a loft in Tribeca until his passing. This lithograph is amongst hundreds of pieces of art that are available at our location in Grandview! Come in today and see the full collection.
