About the Artist:
Hovsep Pushman (1877-1966) was born in the Ottoman Empire to a family in the carpet business. He was the youngest student ever admitted to Istanbul’s Imperial School of Fine Arts at 11 years old. He and his family emigrated to Chicago in 1896, beginning his education of Chinese culture and Asian art. He started teaching at age 17 before moving to Paris to study at Académie Julian, exhibiting at Salon des Artistes Français. He won medals in both 1914 and 1921. He would spend a few years going back and forth between California and Paris, eventually settling in New York City in 1923 when he joined Grand Central Art Galleries. His art typically featured his oriental interests and education with “allegorical significance….executed with technical precision.” He received many accolades and recognition in his lifetime. His paintings are in many major museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, and the Houston Art Museum.
