This lithograph by famed Spanish Painter Joan Miró (1893-1983) depicts an abstract rendering typical of Miró’s work, likely created to advertise an upcoming gallery exhibition. Crafted in tones of simple color and gestural lithographic ink, this lithograph features a marriage of thin and black brushstrokes that interject into a colorful composition, spelling out, “murales” (“murals”) and “peintures” (“paintings”) and creating structures that lead the viewer’s eye through the composition. Framed in gold, this print is detailed with Miró’s large print signature in plate, and is denoted as originating from his workshop, Galerie Maeght, as printed in the lower right left hand corner of the lithograph
About the Artist:
Joan Miró was a Spanish painter, sculptor, and ceramicist born in Barcelona in 1893. A famed member of the Surrealist movement, Miró’s work has been described as a sandbox for the subconscious mind, a re-creation of childlike rendering, and a manifestation of Catalan pride. Two museums dedicated to his work, the Fundació Joan Miró and the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró, were respectively established in his native city of Barcelona and his adoptive city of Palma before his death in 1983.
