Original artist proof woodcut by Columbus-based printmaker Sid Chafetz (1922-2013) depicts the portrait of Yiddish playwright and author Sholem Aleichem (1859-1916). About the Artist:
Sid Chafetz (1922-2013) was an artist and professor based in Columbus, Ohio. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, he attended Rhode Island School of Design before being drafted into the US Army in 1942. He returned after his service and graduated in 1947. He continued his education in France at L’Ecole Americaine des Beaux-Arts and the Acadãmie Julian, alongside artists Fernand Lãger and Stanley W. Hayter. Chafetz would then teach at The Ohio State University beginning in 1948, and was an active part of developing the printmaking program within the Department of Art. He retired from teaching in 1982 to focus on his own art. Deeply satirical with beliefs, his works bear a haunting style laden with politics, education, and literature.

RANDALL LAGRO (1958-) “Ascended” Monotype Print
Original monotype print by American artist Randall LaGro (1958-) depicts a figure floating in space against washed out ink tones, hints of telephone poles, archways, and a bird ever so faintly tucked into the image. LaGro often begins an artwork by completely abstract methods, working quickly and without judgment to let the image dictate its own existence, with the one-off monotype method of printmaking serving this purpose wonderfully. This original etching by late Pennsylvania-based artist Joanne Isaac depicts a blooming lily flower, likely a Lilium pensylvanicum, against a stark, inky black background. A beloved artist in her community of Quakertown, Pennsylvania, Isaac studied at both the Parsons School of Design and Yale University before beginning her printmaking process, now carried on by her daughter, Rachel, a worthy artist in her own right. Isaac would draw, etch, print, hand-color, and frame all of her own work, making each piece a unique, treasured find. SALVADOR DALI “The Proud” Wood Engraving from The Divine Comedy
“The Proud” is inspired by Purgatory, Canto 11 from Dante’s Divine Comedy. Figures with Surrealist styling illustrate this piece of the epic with earthen tones for a solemn look with rusty warmth. Mat in white and framed in textured brown. Information on reverse.
This wood engraving print is taken from a collective book of Salvador Dali’s illustrations of Dante’s The Divine Comedy. Dali was commissioned by the Italian government in 1950 to create a complete work of these illustrations to commemorate the 700th anniversary of Dante’s birth. After much dispute amongst the government powers over Dali’s self-admitted questionable morality, the exhibition and commission were cancelled. Dali had already become obsessed with the concept, so he decided to work with French fine art publisher Joseph Forêt instead. In 1959, the limited edition books were published. In May of 1960, and exhibition of 100 original watercolors by Salvador Dali illustrated 12,000 verses from The Divine Comedy.
About the Artist:
Salvador Dali (1904-1989) was a surrealist painter best known for his melting clocks. Dali was born in Spain to a wealthy family who encouraged him to pursue art. He studied in Madrid and later relocated to France where he met Pablo Picasso. His painting's typically featured dream-like motifs as he believed that dreams and imagination should take precedence over marginal human thought. Salvador Dali is widely regarded as one of the most influential artists of the 20th-century.

Antique MANUEL ROBBE (1872-1936) “La Parisienne” Etching with Aquatint
Original etching with aquatint by French printmaker Manuel Robbe depicts a sophisticated image of a woman adjusting her hat in a mirror, the title of the print, “La Parisienne”, suggesting a night on the town in Paris. Regarded as a master of the aquatinting technique, Robbe was influenced by Degas, Renoir, and Toulouse-Lautrec and delighted in showing the individuality of female subjects, celebrating their beauty. JULES PASCIN “Pierre MacOrlan” Mezzotint
An original print of Pierre MacOrlan by artist Jules Pascin. Handwritten at the bottom is “épreuve unique”, meaning “single test” likely indicating the nature of the mezzoprint medium as well as Pascin’s experimentation with it. Despite the annotation, it is unlikely to be a sole impression, having been reproduced in a posthumous volume of Pascin restrikes titled "Tombeau de Pascin".
About the Artist:
Jules Pascin (1885-1930) was a French Expressionist painter born in Bulgaria to a Sephardic Jewish family. He moved to Paris in 1905 and became a part of the surge of turn of the century artists flocking to the city. He was featured in many successful exhibitions and achieved commercial success, without the critical acclaim he was longing for. He lived in the United States from 1914-1920 to avoid World War I. He became an American citizen, but returned to Paris after the war. Pascin was similar to Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec in that he drew inspiration from his surroundings and used his friends and associates as subjects.
