NICODEMUS POTTERY 8 Piece “Nativity” Set of Ceramic Figures
This set of ceramic sculptures by Nicodemus Pottery consists of eight separate figures and tenderly depicts the classic nativity story. A lasting figure in the Columbus art scene, Chester Nicodemus (1901-1990) imbues gentle reverence onto the figures in this set, with each character bowing their heads in reverence or silently praying towards the newborn Christ child. Glazed in a glossy, translucent white, each figure in this set of ceramic sculptures is affixed with Nicodemus’ studio insignia along their underside, ensuring authenticity.
About the Artist:
Chester Nicodemus (1901-1990) was a Columbus, Ohio potter, sculptor, and teacher known for his small clay birds, as well as other wildlife, teapots and pitchers. His pieces are recognizable as being produced with variously colored translucent glazes, which enhanced the redness of the high iron content of Ohio clay to create a russet brown undertone. Nicodemus earned a degree from Cleveland Art School and then went on to teach at Dayton Art School and Wittenberg College. In 1932, he became dean at the Columbus College of Art and Design and later taught at Ohio State University and served as president of the Columbus Art League. All of Nicodemus' molds and glazes were destroyed upon his death at his request.

This original terracotta sculpture by Russian-born American artist Alexander Ney (1939-) depicts a striking, contemporary portrait bust of an elongated face, punctuated with a heavily perforated surface. Best known for his unique take on clay and terracotta sculpture, Ney emigrated to the United States in 1974 with the encouragement of Elaine de Kooning and currently resides and works in New York City where he is a regular staple amongst the gallery and museum circuit. Resting on an included, modern base, this original sculpture is stamped with Ney’s studio insignia on its underside.
