Vintage KNOLL Bertoia Side Chair

SOLD

Designed by Harry Bertoia (1915-1978) for Knoll, this side chair is an astounding study in space, form, and function. Crafted with a backing composed of wires in a gridded fashion to envelop the sitter, this chair features sled style legs that keep the chair sturdy, while not detracting from its modern aesthetic. Finding grace in an industrial material, this chair has a design that works in any room arrangement.

About the Designer:
Harry Bertoia (1915-1978) was born in San Lorenzo, Italy on March 10, 1915. Presented the opportunity to move to Detroit at age 15, Bertoia moved to America and lived with his older brother, Oreste. In 1937, he received a scholarship to study at the Cranbrook Academy of Art where he encountered Ray and Charles Eames and Florence Knoll for the first time. A gifted artist who dabbled in jewelry making, sculpture, and furniture design, Bertoia introduced his collection for Knoll in 1952, which included the famous diamond chair: a fluid, sculptural form made from a welded lattice work of steel. In Bertoia’s own words, “If you look at these chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture. Space passes right through them.” Bertoia died in Barto, Pennsylvania, at the age of 63 in 1978.

This side chair is amongst hundreds of pieces of furniture that are available at our location in Grandview! Come in today and see the full collection.
