After LEONARD WELLS VOLK “Hands of ABRAHAM LINCOLN” Bronze Sculptures
$3,500.00
This pair of bronze sculptures by American sculptor Leonard Wells Volk (1828-1895) depicts the hands of the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), and were likely cast from earlier bronze replicas made by Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1848-1907), a fellow sculptor. The plaster originals by Volk were cast on May 20th, 1860, two days after Lincoln had been nominated by the Republican Party for the presidency. Lincoln’s right hand was still swollen from shaking hands with supporters and as such, he held a piece of cut broom handle to steady his hand in the mold. These unique pieces of American history have accrued a natural patina over the years and showcase etched details en verso that denote the date, model, and artist.
