Rare Large NICODEMUS Polychrome Siamese Cat

A large ceramic sculpture of a Siamese cat by Nicodemus Pottery. Glazed in a glossy, polychrome finish to mimic realistic fur markings, this sculptural cat rests in a seated position, eyes locked directly ahead. This rare piece of pottery has been hand signed by Chester Nicodemus on the underside of the sculpture. About the Artist: Chester Nicodemus (1901-1990) was a Columbus, Ohio potter, sculptor, and teacher known for his small clay birds, as well as other wildlife, teapots and pitchers. His pieces are recognizable as being produced with variously colored translucent glazes, which enhanced the redness of the high iron content of Ohio clay to create a russet brown undertone. Nicodemus earned a degree from Cleveland Art School and then went on to teach at Dayton Art School and Wittenberg college. In 1932, he became dean at the Columbus College of Art and Design and later taught at Ohio State University and served as president of the Columbus Art League. Circa 1960, a set of 3 ceramic penguins by Nicodemus Pottery. Glazed in a high gloss, oxidized copper finish, each penguin is marked with original stickers titling them as “Pessimist”, “Optimist”, and “Investigator”. Described as creating “refined primitive” oil paintings, she created over 600 works of art. Collections of her work include that of the Ohio State House and the Ohio Governor’s Mansion. Isenhart exhibited her work largely in the Midwest and in New York City. She died at 85 in 2005 at the age of 85 in Newark, Ohio.
