Large carved figure by German Village artist Martin Tischler circa 1970 is smoothly styled in the form of a woman, draped in cloth with a short, blunt haircut. Tischler was a woodworker based in German Village, Columbus and was the son of Rookwood Pottery artist Vera Tischler. A medium-light finish has a satin gloss, highlighting the wood grain. SID CHAFETZ “Processional” Signed Artist Proof Circa 1959

Artist proof print titled “Processional” by artist Sid Chafetz dated 1959 depicts four collegiates with “medio tutissimus ibis” emblazoned in red on a large flag behind them. Translated, the flag reads, “It’s safest in the middle”. Titled, signed, marked, and dated in pencil along lower mat. Framed in black.  About the Artist: Sid Chafetz (1922-?) was an artist and professor based in Columbus, Ohio. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, he attended Rhode Island School of Design before being drafted into the US Army in 1942. He returned after his service and graduated in 1947. He continued his education in France at L’Ecole Americaine des Beaux-Arts and the Acadãmie Julian, alongside artists Fernand Lãger and Stanley W. Hayter. Chafetz would then teach at The Ohio State University beginning in 1948, and was an active part of developing the printmaking program within the Department of Art. He retired from teaching in 1982 to focus on his own art. Made by Ohio artist Robert Martin (1918-1998) from rustic barn wood, this primitive cut-out creates a lively jester.  Hand painted details of red, yellow, orange, green, red, blue, and purple decorate the rustic wood while still highlighting the material with artistic tact. Similar pieces by artist available, sold separately.  About the Artist: Robert Martin (1918-1998) was born in Cleveland, Ohio and raised by his grandmother. His grandmother, having grown up in the Victorian Era, is responsible for the period's influence on his early works. Martin studied the painting from books of the masters, old and new. He worked from life, enjoying the process and interaction that was created. In the 1980s, he began working from photographs with his series of Victorian Village scenes. An ever-learning student, his work has distinctly different decades reflecting his progress and interests. Persisting was his use of oil on canvas, despite his training in other mediums. Babblement is an original watercolor by Columbus, Ohio artist David Schackne. Busy in both color and composition, this landscape features tones of green, blue, red, orange, and yellow with strikes of black throughout. Signed on bottom and titled on reverse.  About the Artist: David Schackne (1923-2004) was an architect who designed many of Columbus's public high schools. As a teenager he studied at Columbus Art School (now CCAD) and would graduate from Ohio State University with a degree in architecture. An original painting from folk artist Anthony Joseph Salvatore(1938-1994). Also known as Tony Joe, Salvatore is a notable African American artist born in Youngstown, Ohio. Seen in collections such as the Smithsonian Institute, Salvatore produced political and spiritual messages through a surreal, folk lens. This work is unsigned and comes from a private collection. NICODEMUS POTTERY Bull Circa 1970

Circa 1970, this bull sculpture by Nicodemus Pottery has a rusty brown glaze with a high gloss finish. The thick bull bears his short horns with head down, with his tail whimsically twisted. About the Artist: Chester Nicodemus (1901-1990) was a Columbus, Ohio potter, sculptor, and teacher known for his small clay birds, as well as other wildlife, teapots and pitchers. His pieces are recognizable as being produced with variously colored translucent glazes, which enhanced the redness of the high iron content of Ohio clay to create a russet brown undertone. Nicodemus earned a degree from Cleveland Art School and then went on to teach at Dayton Art School and Wittenberg college. In 1932, he became dean  at the Columbus College of Art and Design and later taught at Ohio State University and served as president of the Columbus Art League.
