TALLE BAMAZI (1966-) Original Colored Pencil Drawing on Board

$295.00
This original colored pencil drawing on board by African-born, Columbus-based artist Talle Bamazi (1966-) depicts a lone female nude, a cyclops, seated and working at a sewing machine in a display of surrealistic wit and charm. A revered master in the Columbus art scene, Bamazi often blends traditional African imagery with the philosophy of contemporary art, leading him to foster relationships with other, prominent African-American artists such as Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson and April Sunami. This original drawing is framed in black and has been signed by the artist in the lower right hand corner of the board. About the Artist: Talle Bamazi (1966-) was born into the Kabiye ethnic group in northern Togo and began his artistic career as an apprentice to his uncle, a traditional Togolese artist. Although he studied architecture in Lomé, Bamazi returned to painting and developed his own distinctive style, bridging traditional African art with that of the contemporary art movements of the present day. After moving to the United States, Bamazi studied at the Art Students League of New York and earned a MFA at the New York Academy of Art before moving to Columbus, Ohio. From 2004 until 2011, Bamazi operated a gallery called KIACA (Kabiye Impact Contemporary African Art), which was the only black-owned gallery in Columbus' noted arts' district, the Short North, and one of the few black-owned galleries in the city. KIACA served as an influential talent incubator for many Columbus-area African and African-American artists, including psycheñwelic painter April Sunami and Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson. Bamazi also served as the lead artist-in-residence at the King Arts Complex, where his monumental series of life-sized portraits of Columbus-area black artists was featured at the Columbus Museum of Art and now hangs in the historic Pythian theater. Bamazi continues to live and work in Columbus and has had his work featured in Art in America, Monarch Magazine, C-BUS Magazine, Valentine New York Art Magazine, and Diva Magazine, among many others. Vintage CURTIS JERÉ Abstract Floral Wall Sculpture

$495.00
Fabricated from brass, this early sculpture by Curtis Jeré depicts a cacophony of abstracted floral designs that resemble waving cattails or perhaps some foreign marsh plant. Wall mounted, this sculpture’s patinated brass construction provides a beautifully industrial contrast to the stylized organic subject matter this piece of art presents. Perfect for the beginning or seasoned art collector, this sizable sculpture is signed and dated to 1968 by the artists. About the Artist: C. Jeré is a compound nom de plume of Jerry Fels and Curtis Freiler, two brother-in-laws. They were metalworking artists who focused on home accessories and wall sculptures. The works of C. Jeré were produced and marketed by Artisan House, an art production for the average consumer that was founded by the duo in 1963. Freiler was the chief of production and Fels was the chief of design. They employed a great number of minorities and handicapped people and at one point employed 300 people. They sold the company in 1972. Early C. Jeré works were produced in California, but continue to be made overseas since the company’s outsourcing in 2003. Freiler passed away in 2008, Fels in 2013 at 103 years old. Vintage MARTZ POTTERY “Bird Bottle” Vase

$235.00
Crafted in 1970, this vintage “Bird Bottle” vase by Martz Pottery adds a wonderful piece of postmodern pottery to the tabletop décor. Glazed in white with earthy, washy tones wrapping around the body of the vase, this vase features two mouths that allow for a variety of floral arrangements.  About the Designer: Martz Pottery was created by husband and wife team Gordon and Jane Martz. They met while studying ceramics at Alfred University, married upon graduation, and moved to Jane’s hometown. Jane’s family owned Marshall Studios, a company that produced hand painted lampshades. As the company grew, their production expanded to creating turned wood lamp bases as well. Marshall Studios then changed generations to Jane’s parents, and the young artists were encouraged to contribute their talents. They devised a way to mass produce these pottery bases while still having handmade aesthetic and finishes. One of their lamps, Martz No. 101, was recognized by Edgar Kaufmann, Jr. who worked with the Museum of Modern Art. The lamp was selected to appear at the MoMA for their 1953 Good Design exhibit, which launched Marshall Studios and Martz Pottery’s popularity and sales. Once the Modernism trend declined, the company was sold and later closed. This vase is amongst hundreds of pieces of décor that are available at our location in Grandview!
