About the Artist:
Alfred Zwiebel (1914-2005) was born in Fürth, Germany before moving to Bamberg with his family. Surrounded by the delights of Middle Age, Renaissance, and Baroque art and architecture, Zwiebel’s youth was imbued with rich culture and beauty that informed his artistic style and perspective. When the Nazis came to power, Zwiebel and his family escaped to the United States, eventually settling in New York City. Zwiebel married portraitist Clara Fried in 1941. Zwiebel became an American citizen after serving in the US Army during World War II. He worked an eclectic array of day jobs that allowed him to paint in his free time, leading to painting full time in the 1960s. He felt out of place with 20th century modernism, considering himself a modern impressionist and admitted romanticist. He painted until the end of his life, despite struggles with failing vision.
