ANDY WARHOL (1928-1987) Endangered Species Portfolio

This portfolio of prints by American pop art master Andy Warhol (1928-1987) offers pieces from Warhol’s “Endangered Species” series made in 1983. Commissioned by art dealers Ronald and Frayda Feldman, the idea for the portfolio was born after conversations they had with Warhol about ecological issues. Some pieces included in the portfolio include “Black Rhinoceros”,  “Bighorn Ram”, and “Grevy’s Zebra”, with each print measuring at 12.5” x 16”. Unsigned by Warhol, this portfolio is the perfect gift for devotees of the Pope of Pop.

About the Artist:
Andy Warhol (born Andrew Warhola) was born in Pittsburgh on August 6th, 1928, the son of Rusyn immigrants from Slovakia. After graduating from the Carnegie Institute of Technology, Warhol moved to New York City, where he worked as a very successful commercial illustrator for roughly a decade. Warhol began painting in the late 1950s and by 1963, he was mass-producing purposely banal images of consumer goods and celebrities by means of photographic silkscreen prints in a movement known as “Pop Art”. The late 1960s for Warhol included his rise to celebrity in his own right, and he began making underground films that are recognized as avant-garde cinema. An assassination attempt in 1968 saw Warhol retreat from the open studio and focus on more commercial means of production throughout the 1970s and 1980s. One of Warhol’s last major collaborations was with the young American painter Jean-Michel Basquiat, with whom he produced a body of work in 1984. Warhol remained active until his death in February of 1987 and he is celebrated as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century.
