ANTHONY MELNIKAS(1927-2005) Mid Century Oil on Canvas Portrait – Signed

SOLD

Mid century portrait of a man by Anthony Melnikas has intriguing style with thick, loose brush strokes. A muted palette of cool jewel tones creates a rich look to the sketching man. Possibly a self portrait. Signed on reverse with remnants of a tag.

About the Artist:
Anthony Melnikas (1927-2005) was born in Lithuania and lived most of his life in the United States. He served as a professor of Art History at the Ohio State University for 34 years. Melnikas is perhaps most notoriously known for a scandal involving the theft of 14th century documents from the Vatican library, in which he frequently had unsupervised access to over the span of 30 years. This scandal was an international one as Melnikas had smuggled multiple stolen pages across country lines.
