BYRON KOHN Watercolor Painting of Schwartz Castle

$395.00
Original watercolor painting by German Village artist Byron Kohn (1926-2010) depicts Schwartz Castle in German Village. Schwartz Castle was built in the 1800s by Frederick Schwartz, a German immigrant who established a successful pharmacy in Columbus. He had a fiancee in Germany who he planned to send for once he was established so they could be married. They corresponded frequently, planning their wedding. She desired to be married in a castle, and when he could not find one in America, he decided to build his own, complete with a turret that towered above surrounding German Village architecture. When the castle was complete, he wrote to his beloved to invite her to finally join him in Columbus. When she told him that she had found someone else she would rather marry, local legend alleges he went mad, and exhibited bizarre behaviors for the rest of his life. When he died, he didn’t leave the castle to anyone, so it became property of the city of Columbus. It is said that the ghost of Frederick Schwartz haunts the castle, particularly the famed turret. This watercolor painting captures the impressive, notorious architecture with classic German Village charm. Signed by Kohn and dated 1965 in corner.
