JURIS KAKIS (1938-) “Portrait of a Young Man” Original Acrylic on Canvas

$795.00
Original acrylic on canvas painting by Latvian-American painter Juris Kakis (1938-) depicts the stylized portrait of a young man in tones of yellow, white, and blue. Kakis uses black lines to create a face, allowing his fascinating technique to create an intriguing study of color and texture throughout the composition.  Commonly depicting portraits of horses, people, and floral still lifes, Kakis’ images remain popular in the Columbus art scene, his images continually renowned for their dynamic, colorful constructions, effortless techniques, and contemporary appeal. This original painting is mounted in a stark white frame and is signed and dated to 2000 by the artist along the bottom of the canvas. About the Artist: Juris Kakis is a Lativian-born contemporary artist based in Columbus, Ohio. Born in 1938 in Riga, Latvia, Kakis immigrated to the United States with his painter mother and medical doctor father at the age of 11. A gifted artist from a young age, Kakis received an award for his art within his first year of moving to America, while living in New York City. Kakis attempted to continue the generational legacy of doctors that the men in his family had perpetuated, but ended up pursuing his Masters of Fine Arts instead, going on to teach painting and drawing at Ohio Dominican University for 37 years. Kakis retired as a professor with tenure at Ohio Dominican and was, at the time of his retirement, the Chair of the Department of Art and Curator of the Wehrle Gallery. Exhibiting throughout the United States and Europe, Kakis’ works are included in the permanent collections of the Columbus Museum of Art and the National Museum of Art in Riga, Latvia, as well as numerous corporate and private collections. Printed in layered tones of ink, the woman is surrounded by small sculptures and paintings hanging on the wall behind her, suggesting this woman was a prominent collector encountered by Chafetz. Matted and housed in a postmodern pink and black frame that accentuates the color palette of the piece, this original woodcut is titled, signed, and numbered by Chafetz along the bottom of the print. About the Artist: Sid Chafetz (1922-2013) was an artist and professor based in Columbus, Ohio. He continued his education in France at L’Ecole Americaine des Beaux-Arts and the Acadãmie Julian, alongside artists Fernand Lãger and Stanley W. Hayter. Chafetz would then teach at The Ohio State University beginning in 1948, and was an active part of developing the printmaking program within the Department of Art.
