$1,500.00 $795.00
Stunning lithograph from Al Hirschfeld (1903-2003) depicting Kabuki performer with large parasol. “Sukeroku” was published in 1976 by Goodstadt. Hirschfeld was heavily influenced by Kabuki theater and Japanese woodblock prints, and was invited to Tokyo by a Japanese foundation. After this trip he created twelve prints, which was the birth of “The Kabuki Series”. About the Artist: Albert "Al" Hirschfeld (1903 –2003) was born in St. Louis, Missouri, later moving with his family to New York City to study at the Art Students League of New York. In 1924 Hirschfeld traveled to Paris and London to study painting, drawing and sculpture. Upon his return to the States a friend and Broadway press agent showed one of his drawings to an editor at the New York Herald Tribune. JOHAN BARTHOLD JONGKIND (1819-1891) Original Oil Nightscape on Panel

$33,000.00
Own a piece of art history with this original oil on panel painting by the illustrious Dutch master and frontrunner of Impressionism, Johan Barthold Jongkind (1819-1891). This painting on panel features a moonlit maritime scene that Jongkind is best known for. This painting is considered “nocturnally perfect” with radiating moonlight in a cloudy sky being perfectly reflected in the shimmering waters underneath. The low horizon, deep contrast in color, and loose yet intentional brushstrokes are quintessential to Jongkind’s style. In 1874, Jongkind was extended an invitation to participate in the first exhibition of Impressionist works at the Salon in Paris, but declined. Following the rejection of his painting “Moonlight in Rotterdam” at the 1873 Salon, he refused to participate in such exhibitions again. This exact painting was created in 1874, at that pivotal point in the Impressionist movement and in art history as a whole. This painted panel is framed in an aged gold frame with a paper label on the reverse. Jongkind’s signature and the year 1874 is found in the bottom left corner of the composition. About the Artist: Johan Bathold Jongkind (1819-1891) was a Dutch painter and printmaker who is widely recognized as a forefather of Impressionism. After training at the art academy in The Hague, he moved to Monparnasse, Paris. After studying and working for two years, he was accepted into the Paris Salon exhibition. Despite receiving praise from critics Charles Baudelaire and Emile Zola, he experienced little success that induced depression worsened by alcoholism. Jongkind would continue to struggle with his mental health and dependency issues throughout his life. He returned to Holland for 5 years before going back to Paris, renting a studio and developing a style that would be critical to the consequent Impressionist movement. He met  Eugène Boudin, Alfred Sisley, and Claude Monet, and became a mentor to the three young artists. Monet  attributed the “definitive education” of his artistic eye to Jongkind. Jongkind mostly focused on marine landscapes, consistently employing strong contrasts and lively brushwork. Following in Dutch tradition, most of his works feature a low horizon to emphasize the sky. His legacy is strong in both the art market and in museum collections around the world. Although his contemporaries admired his work and style, his distaste for social gatherings and salons may have been what prevented him from coming to the forefront of the Impressionist movement. However, his background contributions were equally as important to him personally and many other young artists.

ERTE “The Tango” Bronze Sculpture on Marble Base

$4,500.00
After a long and successful career as a graphic artist and fashion designer, Erté revived his talents as a sculptor to create bronzes in his signature style at 75 years old. “The Tango” features two tall and slender figures engaged in the titular dance. A blonde woman and dark haired man both are wearing red to embody the boldness of the dance. The duo has an oblong green marble base with mounted brass nameplate. About the Artist: Erté (1892-1990) was born Romain de Tirtoff in St. Petersburg, Russia to an admiral father amongst the social elite. He grew up surrounded by the elegant women of his mother’s social circle, fascinated by their fashion and exotic souvenirs of his father’s travels. He left Russia at 19 and head to Paris to begin his fashion career under the pseudonym Erté, a play on his initials. He designed costumed and designed fashions for renowned actresses and stage productions. In 1915, he began his 20 year partnership with Harper’s Bazaar which cemented his reputation as the Father of Art Deco. The 1940s and 1950s were comparatively obscure for Erté, and his career was revitalized through colorful lithographic prints and sculptures. NICODEMUS Matte Finish Pottery Owl

SOLD

Owl by Nicodemus Pottery has a matte milky white finish with bits of brick red pottery peeking through. Round yellow eyes, a black beak, and black talons complete this design.

About the Artist: Chester Nicodemus (1901-1990) was a Columbus, Ohio potter, sculptor, and teacher known for his small clay birds, as well as other wildlife, teapots and pitchers. His pieces are recognizable as being produced with variously colored translucent glazes, which enhanced the redness of the high iron content of Ohio clay to create a russet brown undertone.

Nicodemus earned a degree from Cleveland Art School and then went on to teach at Dayton Art School and Wittenberg college. In 1932, he became dean  at the Columbus College of Art and Design and later taught at Ohio State University and served as president of the Columbus Art League. All of Nicodemus' molds and glazes were destroyed upon his death at his request.
