Artist proof print titled “Processional” by artist Sid Chafetz dated 1959 depicts four collegiates with “medio tutissimus ibis” emblazoned in red on a large flag behind them. Translated, the flag reads, “It’s safest in the middle”. Titled, signed, marked, and dated in pencil along lower mat. Framed in black.
About the Artist:
Sid Chafetz (1922-?) was an artist and professor based in Columbus, Ohio. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, he attended Rhode Island School of Design before being drafted into the US Army in 1942. He returned after his service and graduated in 1947. He continued his education in France at L’Ecole Americaine des Beaux-Arts and the Acadãmie Julian, alongside artists Fernand Lãger and Stanley W. Hayter. Chafetz would then teach at The Ohio State University beginning in 1948, and was an active part of developing the printmaking program within the Department of Art. He retired from teaching in 1982 to focus on his own art. Deeply satirical with beliefs, his works bear a haunting style laden with politics, education, and literature.

CARRIE GRABER (1975-) Hand Embellished Giclee “Evening Out”
Hand embellished giclée from California-based contemporary artist Carrie Graber (1975-) depicts a woman in low light and black evening gown fixing her shoe for the titular, “Evening Out.” A warm and sensual painting, this print has been heavily embellished with texture to mimic brushstrokes directly from the artist’s studio. Housed in a polished gold frame, this print is signed and numbered by Graber in the bottom right hand corner of the print.

SALVADOR DALI “The Smoke of Irascibility” Wood Engraving from The Divine Comedy
“The Smoke of Irascibility” is inspired by Purgatory, Canto 16 from Dante’s Divine Comedy. Two female figures with forlorn expressions directly face the viewer, with a third figure shrouded in shadows to the right. The two distinguishable figures hold each other for support. This work has a muted, grey palette. Mat in white and framed in rustic black. Information on reverse.
This wood engraving print is taken from a collective book of Salvador Dali’s illustrations of Dante’s The Divine Comedy. Dali was commissioned by the Italian government in 1950 to create a complete work of these illustrations to commemorate the 700th anniversary of Dante’s birth. After much dispute amongst the government powers over Dali’s self-admitted questionable morality, the exhibition and commission were cancelled. Dali had already become obsessed with the concept, so he decided to work with French fine art publisher Joseph Forêt instead. In 1959, the limited edition books were published. In May of 1960, and exhibition of 100 original watercolors by Salvador Dali illustrated 12,000 verses from The Divine Comedy.

He studied in Madrid and later relocated to France where he met Pablo Picasso. Salvador Dali is widely regarded as one of the most influential artists of the 20th-century.

Copy of the fourth issue of Verve, a modernist Parisian art magazine published by Teriade between 1937 and 1960. First published in 1937, Verve was a magazine that attracted artists such as Henri Matisse to create cover art for the publication and included James Joyce and Ernest Hemingway as early contributors. ZAO WOU-KI Abstract Etching
By Chinese-French artist Zao Wou-ki, this etching is abstractly composed with yellow and bits of burgundy decorating black and white. Tonal variation indicates a mastery of the medium. Framed in simple black with a wide white mat. Numbered 72/95, signed in pencil Zao Wou-ki 068.
About the Artist:
Taken from attached information label: Zao Wou-ki (1921-2013) was born in Peking, China. Zao Wou-ki studied for six years at the School of Fine Arts in Hangchow, and later served there as professor of drawing. In 1948 he left China and settled permanently in Paris. The following year he had the first of many one-man exhibitions in Paris.
Zao Wou-ki’s work, stylized at first, is now abstract. In addition to his paintings he has illustrated a number of books including Malroux’s Tenation de l’Occident, St. John Perse’s Poems, and Rimbaud’s Illuminations. His graphics have been widely exhibited, both in France and abroad.
Zao Wou-ki’s first one-man show in New York was presented in 1952. Since 1958 his works have been shown regularly at the Kootz Gallery in New York. He has been represented in many group shows, most recently in an exhibition of French paintings, shown at the Metropolitan Museum, the National Gallery of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Museum of Art, Boston. His works are in the collections of important museums and galleries throughout the world, including the Musee de Art Moderne in Paris, the Tate Gallery in London, the Museum Folkwang in Essen, and the museum at Helsinki, Finland.
