This original woodblock print by Japanese contemporary artist Masao Ido (1945-) depicts an exquisitely detailed rendering of a traditional Zen garden: a minimalist dry landscape with natural elements of rock, gravel, sand, and wood. Masao’s work often combines old, traditional woodblock techniques with the depiction of stereotypical Japanese subjects, such as gardens, landmarks, and villages to great effect, leading to his successful career. Framed in wood, this original woodblock is signed and dated to 1975 by the artist along the bottom of the paper.

This wood engraving print is taken from a collective book of Salvador Dali’s illustrations of Dante’s The Divine Comedy. Dali was commissioned by the Italian government in 1950 to create a complete work of these illustrations to commemorate the 700th anniversary of Dante’s birth. After much dispute amongst the government powers over Dali’s self-admitted questionable morality, the exhibition and commission were cancelled. Dali had already become obsessed with the concept, so he decided to work with French fine art publisher Joseph Forêt instead. In 1959, the limited edition books were published. In May of 1960, and exhibition of 100 original watercolors by Salvador Dali illustrated 12,000 verses from The Divine Comedy.
About the Artist:
Salvador Dali (1904-1989) was a surrealist painter best known for his melting clocks. Dali was born in Spain to a wealthy family who encouraged him to pursue art. He studied in Madrid and later relocated to France where he met Pablo Picasso. His painting's typically featured dream-like motifs as he believed that dreams and imagination should take precedence over marginal human thought. Salvador Dali is widely regarded as one of the most influential artists of the 20th-century.

Featuring graphic marks on a vivid ground of red, blue, yellow, and green, Masson’s surrealistic mark-making invites viewers to investigate the image and form their own meaning within the piece. About the Artist: André Masson(1896-1987) was born in Balagny-sur-Thérain, Oise and began to study art at the age of 11 at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, later moving his studies to Paris. Masson’s early work displayed an interest in Cubism, but he later became more closely associated with Surrealism, becoming more of the more enthusiastic advocates of automatic drawing; a practice in which the hand is allowed to move randomly across the paper or canvas. Under the German occupation of France, Masson was labeled a degenerate artist by the Nazi regime and he later moved away from Surrealism, adopting a more structured style with themes of eroticism and violence. After escaping France to America, Masson’s work became an important influence on burgeoning Abstract Expressionists, such as Jackson Pollock, as he worked in Connecticut. Following the war, he returned to France and continued to paint until his death in 1987 at the age of 91.

JULES PASCIN “Pierre MacOrlan” Mezzotint
An original print of Pierre MacOrlan by artist Jules Pascin. Handwritten at the bottom is “épreuve unique”, meaning “single test” likely indicating the nature of the mezzoprint medium as well as Pascin’s experimentation with it. Despite the annotation, it is unlikely to be a sole impression, having been reproduced in a posthumous volume of Pascin restrikes titled "Tombeau de Pascin".
About the Artist:
Jules Pascin (1885-1930) was a French Expressionist painter born in Bulgaria to a Sephardic Jewish family. He moved to Paris in 1905 and became a part of the surge of turn of the century artists flocking to the city. He was featured in many successful exhibitions and achieved commercial success, without the critical acclaim he was longing for. He lived in the United States from 1914-1920 to avoid World War I. He became an American citizen, but returned to Paris after the war. Pascin was similar to Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec in that he drew inspiration from his surroundings and used his friends and associates as subjects.

ROCKWELL KENT (1882-1971) ‘Flame’ Original Woodcut
An original woodcut print from American artist Rockwell Kent (1882-1971) titled “The Bather’ from a 1937 American Block Print Calendar with documentation of the calendar on the back of frame. Each illustration by a notable artist was printed separately so that it could be framed. Image features a heroic figure in the foreground against a large, stark white flame, mountains in the distance. This piece is a prime example of Kent’s recurring theme and interest in mysticism.
About the Artist: Rockwell Kent (1882-1971) was born in Tarrytown, New York and was interested in art from a young age. His family’s financial standings prevented him from pursuing a career in fine arts and consequently, he completed a Bachelor of Arts in architecture at Columbia University. While primarily focusing on scenes of nature, Kent’s figurative works often contain mystical themes such as heroism and isolation. Around 1920, Kent began making woodcuts, establishing himself as one of the most prominent early American Modernists. Kent eventually left the New York art world, his time spent more on progressive political causes such as worker’s rights and preventing the spread of fascism in Europe. Later in his life, Kent found new popularity in the Soviet Union and in 1960, he donated 880 prints, drawings, and paintings to the people of the Soviet Union. Kent died of a heart attack in 1971 and was buried at Asgard, his farm in New York.
