PAUL CÈZANNE (1839-1906) Aquatint with Etching “Head of a Young Girl”
SOLD
This aquatint with etching was originally created by renowned Post-Impressionist French painter Paul Cézanne (1839-1906). The rough etching displays Cézanne’s highly recognizable repetitive, exploratory mark-making that builds up to create a complex portrait of the female subject. Framed in a regal gold, this posthumously printed etching is plate signed by Cézanne in the bottom corner of the etching.
About the Artist:
Paul Cézanne was born in Aix-en-Provence, France in 1839 to affluent parents, affording him financial security that was unavailable to most of his contemporaries at the time. Against the wishes of his banker father, Cézanne left Aix for Paris in 1861 to pursue the arts, though his father did eventually reconcile with him and supported his choice of career. In Paris, Cézanne befriended Impressionist Camille Pissarro, who exerted a formative influence on the younger artist. Cézanne became convinced during this friendship that one must paint directly from nature and that he would break down these natural forms into their essential, geometric elements. After Cézanne’s work continued to generate disappointing responses from the public and the Impressionist group of painters, he gradually withdrew into isolation, working alone at his home in southern France. In 1886, he married Hortense Fiquet, a model he had been living with for 17 years, his father dying that same year. Cézanne’s isolation began to lessen during the 1890s. In 1895, largely due to the urging of Pissarro, Monet and Renoir, art dealer Ambroise Vollard showed several of Cézanne’s paintings. As a result, public interest in Cézanne’s work slowly began to develop. Cézanne died in the city of his birth, Aix-en-Provence, in 1906. At the Salon d’Automne of 1907, Cézanne’s artistic achievements were honored with a large retrospective exhibition.
