About the Artist:
Thomas Buechner (1926-2010) was born in Bronxville, New York, and started his art education studying at the Art Students League of New York while working as a night elevator operator at the Plaza Hotel. He then went abroad to study at Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He returned to New York after focusing on his painting, taking a position as an assistant manager at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 1951 he became the founding director of the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York, creating a space to celebrate historic and modern glass works. He would become a crucial part of the glassmaking community through his contributions with the Corning Museum. In 1960, he became one of the youngest museum directors in the country by taking the position at the Brooklyn Museum at 33. He would return back to Corning Glass in 1971 as the president of their Steuben Glass division from 1973-1982, and the head of the Glass Museum from 1973-1980. He retired in 1987, devoting his life to painting.
