About the Artist:
John Haymson (1902-1980) was born in Vienna, Austria and at 16 was accepted to the Vienna Academy of Fine Art. He started working with theatrical impresario Max Reinhardt doing stage and costuming design. He traveled throughout Europe in the early 1930s studying graphics in Germany and France, working in the textile industry creating designs for silk fabrics. He met his wife in Germany, getting married in 1934. In 1938, the couple was forced to flee Austria due to rising anti-semitism. After close encounters and continued complications, Haymson was finally able to receive his visa and emigrated to the United States, settling in New York City. His career flourished, beginning with Warner Brother Movies and teaching painting at Parsons School of Design while establishing his studio at 46th Street in Manhattan. His lithographs were quite popular during the 1960s and 1970s, especially with his partnering with the famed European print house Atelier Mourlot.
