Original gouache on paper by American artist Wilmer Sigfried Richter (1891-1993) depicts an abstracted, foamy seascape against a choppy sky. Titled ‘Impressions’, Richter creates a dramatic landscape with frantic brushwork while maintaining modernist and expressive appeal. Housed in an gadrooned frame, this original gouache is signed by Richter in the lower right corner of the paper.
About the Artist:
Wilmer Siegfried Richter (1891-1993) was a Philadelphia-born artist and illustrator. He started working as an office boy at a sugar refinery at 15 before working in a photo-engraving department at 18 while attending art school at night. He found a new job through a classmate and began his career in commercial art. He spent his career attending classes when he felt compelled to learn a new medium, and traveling frequently. He was drafted into World War I at 27, was deployed without any training, and was almost immediately gassed and wounded in combat. He kept himself occupied with art until he was able to return to the states. The famed Saturday Evening Post took interest in some of his wartime illustrations, and he continued to improve them as they accepted them. He would continue various jobs in commercial art and advertising, painting whenever he could. He moved to Sarasota, Florida after World War II and began teaching art. He died in 1993 at the age of 102.
