CASEY MCGLYNN “This is Why Going Where We’re Going Takes So Long” Original Mixed Media on Canvas $1,495.00

After AUGUSTE RODIN “Femme Nue Assise et de Dos” Serigraph

$495.00 $346.50

Printed after an original drawing by famed French sculptor Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), this serigraph depicts a female nude, seated away from the viewer in an intimate display of modesty. In contrast from his typical work of heavy bronze sculpture, Rodin crafts an image here that is ghostly and thin, almost non-existent and abstract in its loose, gestual rendering. Housed in an ornate gold frame, this serigraph is unmarked, free of any plate signature or estate stamp.

NIKI DE SAINT PHALLE (1930-2002) “Remember?” Serigraph

$2,900.00
Serigraph by French-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002) is titled “Remember?” and depicts various moments of intimacy with a couple paired with whimsical colorful figures. Noted for her experimental style of making art that incorporated whimsical, light-hearted elements, Saint Phalle presents an image of charged eroticism meant to explore the passions she held for her lover. Housed in a modest silver frame, this serigraph is signed by the artist at the right hand corner of the print in faded ink. About the Artist: Catherine Marie-Agnès Fal de Saint Phalle was born in 1930 near Paris to a French father and an American mother as the second of five children. She spent most of her childhood in New York City, and summers in Connecticut or Long Island, though she frequently returned to France to visit relatives, becoming fluent in both French and English. Working as a fashion model in her late teens, Saint Phalle appeared on the cover of Life Magazine and in the pages of Elle and Harper’s Bazaar, and eloped with Henry Matthews, an author and childhood friend, at the age of 18. While Matthews studied music at Harvard University, Saint Phalle began to explore painting, being encouraged to paint as a form of therapy. At the end of the 1950s, Saint Phalle and her husband moved back to Paris. In 1960, however, the couple separated and Saint Phalle moved to a new apartment, established a studio, and met artist Jean Tinguely, with whom she would collaborate artistically. Within a year, they had moved in together and begun a romantic relationship. Saint Phalle became part of the Nouveau Réalisme movement along with Tinguely, Yves Klein, Arman and others, being the only woman in the group. Her most famous and prolific series of works, the Nanas, were begun in the mid-1960s and were inspired by a friend's pregnancy, her reflections on archetypal feminine forms, and the vexed positions that women occupy in modern, patriarchal societies. 'Nanas,' a French slang word roughly equivalent to 'broads,' is a title that encapsulates the theme of the everywoman as well as the casual denigration that closely accompanies the rhetorical grouping of women as a social category. Saint Phalle became one of the first artists to get involved with the AIDS crisis, with the 1980s also serving as the the most prolific period in the Nanas series. Working at her art until the very end, Saint Phalle died in La Jolla, California in May of 2002 and has been immortalized as an artist that has had a significant effect on the development of conceptual art and feminism. JAMES PRADIER (1790-1852) “La Toilette d’Atalante” Bronze Sculpture

$2,500.00
Bronze sculpture by French artist James Pradier (1790-1852) depicts the Arcadian heroine Atalanta, a huntress who was allied with the goddess Artemis. From mythology, Atalanta would agree to marry the suitor that could outrun her. If they were to fail, however, they would be put to death. Praidier’s historical reputation as a most competent artist is exhibited on full display with this gorgeous neoclassical sculpture. This figure of Atalanta kneels against a base denoting Pradier’s signature and the Susse Foundry seal, offering a beautiful rendition of Pradier’s original marble masterpiece.  About the Artist: Born Jean Jacques Pradier in the Republic of Geneva in 1790, James Pradier moved to Paris in 1807 for work before studying at the École des Beaux-Arts beginning in 1808. He won a Prix de Rome that enabled him to study in Rome from 1814 to 1818 at the Villa Medici and made his debut at the Salon in 1819, quickly acquiring a reputation as a talented artist. In 1827, he became a member of the Académie des beaux-arts and a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Pradier oversaw the finish of his sculptures himself and his workshop served as a meeting place for the artists of Paris. Pradier continued to work until his death in 1852, after which the contents of his studio were purchased by the city museum of Geneva. This sculpture is amongst hundreds of pieces of art that are available at our location in Grandview! Come in today and see the full collection.

ANDRÉ MASSON (1896-1987) Signed and Numbered Lithograph

$1,200.00

An original signed and numbered lithograph by famed French artist André Masson (1896-1987) reminiscent of Masson’s works in automatic drawing. Featuring graphic marks on a vivid ground of red, blue, yellow, and green, Masson’s surrealistic mark-making invites viewers to investigate the image and form their own meaning within the piece. Framed in silver and signed and numbered at the bottom.

About the Artist: André Masson(1896-1987) was born in Balagny-sur-Thérain, Oise and began to study art at the age of 11 at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, later moving his studies to Paris. Masson’s early work displayed an interest in Cubism, but he later became more closely associated with Surrealism, becoming more of the more enthusiastic advocates of automatic drawing; a practice in which the hand is allowed to move randomly across the paper or canvas. Under the German occupation of France, Masson was labeled a degenerate artist by the Nazi regime and he later moved away from Surrealism, adopting a more structured style with themes of eroticism and violence. After escaping France to America, Masson’s work became an important influence on burgeoning Abstract Expressionists, such as Jackson Pollock, as he worked in Connecticut.  Following the war, he returned to France and continued to paint until his death in 1987 at the age of 91.

JOHAN BARTHOLD JONGKIND (1819-1891) Original Oil Nightscape on Panel

$33000 $26,400.00
Own a piece of art history with this original oil on panel painting by the illustrious Dutch master and frontrunner of Impressionism, Johan Barthold Jongkind (1819-1891). This painting on panel features a moonlit maritime scene that Jongkind is best known for. This painting is considered “nocturnally perfect” with radiating moonlight in a cloudy sky being perfectly reflected in the shimmering waters underneath. The low horizon, deep contrast in color, and loose yet intentional brushstrokes are quintessential to Jongkind’s style. In 1874, Jongkind was extended an invitation to participate in the first exhibition of Impressionist works at the Salon in Paris, but declined. Following the rejection of his painting “Moonlight in Rotterdam” at the 1873 Salon, he refused to participate in such exhibitions again. This exact painting was created in 1874, at that pivotal point in the Impressionist movement and in art history as a whole. This painted panel is framed in an aged gold frame with a paper label on the reverse. Jongkind’s signature and the year 1874 is found in the bottom left corner of the composition. About the Artist: Johan Bathold Jongkind (1819-1891) was a Dutch painter and printmaker who is widely recognized as a forefather of Impressionism. After training at the art academy in The Hague, he moved to Monparnasse, Paris. After studying and working for two years, he was accepted into the Paris Salon exhibition. Despite receiving praise from critics Charles Baudelaire and Emile Zola, he experienced little success that induced depression worsened by alcoholism. Jongkind would continue to struggle with his mental health and dependency issues throughout his life. He returned to Holland for 5 years before going back to Paris, renting a studio and developing a style that would be critical to the consequent Impressionist movement. He met  Eugène Boudin, Alfred Sisley, and Claude Monet, and became a mentor to the three young artists. Monet  attributed the “definitive education” of his artistic eye to Jongkind. Jongkind mostly focused on marine landscapes, consistently employing strong contrasts and lively brushwork. Following in Dutch tradition, most of his works feature a low horizon to emphasize the sky. His legacy is strong in both the art market and in museum collections around the world. Although his contemporaries admired his work and style, his distaste for social gatherings and salons may have been what prevented him from coming to the forefront of the Impressionist movement. However, his background contributions were equally as important to him personally and many other young artists.

PATRICK NAGEL (1945-1984) “Park Place Estate” Silkscreen

SOLD
Silkscreen by renowned artist and illustrator Patrick Nagel (1945-1984) depicts a female model against a stone blue background with gridded details. A female lion occupies the right hand foreground in a symbolic gesture of the central model’s depicted elegant ferocity. A widely collected artist, Nagel’s popular illustrations emphasize the female form in a distinctive, immediately recognizable style descended from Art Deco and Pop art. Posthumously released, this commemorative silkscreen is matted in a sleek, contemporary frame and signed and numbered by Nagel’s widow, Jennifer Dumas. About the Artist: Patrick Nagel was born November 25, 1945 in Dayton, Ohio, but was raised most of his life in the Los Angeles area. After serving in the United States Army with the 101st Airborne in Vietnam, Nagel attended the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles in 1969, and in that same year he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from California State University, Fullerton. Beginning in 1971, Nagel worked as a graphic designer for ABC Television before partaking in freelance work for companies and magazines such as IBM, Rolling Stone, and Universal Studios. Likewise, Nagel produced album covers for recording artists, most notably for Duran Duran’s 1982 hit album, Rio. Nagel contributed to Playboy Magazine from August 1975 to July 1984, with one of his paintings being published in every issue between that time period, roughly totaling 285 pieces. Nagel died of an undisclosed heart defect in 1984, at the young age of 38. His already popular work exploded throughout the 1980s and flooded the market to make Nagel a quintessential American artist still today.
