About the Artist:
Demetre Chiparus (1886-1947) was a Romanian born artist who traveled Europe in his early 20s to pursue his passion for sculpture. He studied under artists such as Raffaello Romanelli, Antonin Mercie, and Jean Boucher as he perfected his style of high realism. He utilized a combination of bronze and ivory, called chryselephantine. In the later years of his career, Chiparus took inspiration from theater and motion pictures, capturing the energy and movement in an otherwise sturdy and rigid medium. His art often represents the classical manifestation of Art Deco style in decorative bronze ivory sculpture.
