Vintage NICODEMUS POTTERY “Tufted Titmouse”

$425.00
Dated vintage to the 1970s, this rare miniature ceramic figure by Nicodemus Pottery depicts a small tufted titmouse bird perched upon a stump. A lasting figure in the Columbus art scene, Chester Nicodemus (1901-1990) often employed motifs of small animals and birds in his work, providing darling pieces of art that will rightfully adorn any collection. Glazed in both matte and glossy tones of color, this small ceramic sculpture is affixed with Nicodemus’ studio insignia along its underside. About the Artist: Chester Nicodemus (1901-1990) was a Columbus, Ohio potter, sculptor, and teacher known for his small clay birds, as well as other wildlife, teapots and pitchers. His pieces are recognizable as being produced with variously colored translucent glazes, which enhanced the redness of the high iron content of Ohio clay to create a russet brown undertone. Nicodemus earned a degree from Cleveland Art School and then went on to teach at Dayton Art School and Wittenberg College. In 1932, he became dean at the Columbus College of Art and Design and later taught at Ohio State University and served as president of the Columbus Art League. All of Nicodemus' molds and glazes were destroyed upon his death at his request. This pottery sculpture is amongst hundreds of pieces of art that are available at our location in Grandview! Vintage HARRIS STRONG Set of 3 Mounted Tiles

SOLD
Dated mid century modern, this set of three tiles by Harris Strong uses cool tones of blue to create architectural scenes with intriguing perspective. The tiles are mounted to wooden plaques with a warm medium-tone finish to suit mid century modern stylings. Maker’s tag en verso. About the Artist: Harris Strong (1920-2006) was born in Waukesha, Wisconsin. He served as an Army cryptographer during World War II, studying chemical engineering at North Carolina State University. After receiving his degree, he studied ceramic art at New York University. His aunt, the owner of a greeting card company, inspired him to pursue a practical career in art. In 1950 Strong and his wife, Rosyln, founded Harris G. Strong, Inc. in the Bronx, NY. Strong found his niche in decorated ceramic tiles and grew the company with each success. In 1970, a fire destroyed the glaze formulas that had been developed over the previous 20 years. At that point, the company pivoted to concentrate on other wall decor, such as prints, collages, and paintings.  This framed tile art is amongst hundreds of pieces of art that are available at our showroom in Grandview! After CHARLES M. RUSSELL(1864-1926) “Man with Rifle” Bronze Sculpture

SOLD
Cast from original molds by American artist Charles M. Russell (1864-1926), this bronze sculpture depicts a man holding a rifle that he steadies with the usage of a deadened tree stump. Typical of the wild western imagery that Russell exemplifies, a steer’s skull rests at the man’s feet. Russell’s cast signature is displayed at the base of the sculpture. About the Artist: Charles Marion Russell was born on March 19th, 1864 in St. Louis, Missouri and grew up with an avid fascination of the ‘wild west’ in his early years, eventually becoming a sheep rancher in Montana. Starting off as a cowboy, Russell began to document the winter of 1886-1887 in watercolors, which launched his career as an artist. His wife, Nancy, is often credited in helping him attain international acclaim as an artist, setting up shows throughout the United States and abroad. Russell produced about 4000 works of art, including oil and watercolor paintings, drawings and sculptures in wax, clay, plaster and other materials, some of which were also cast in bronze. He died in 1926 in the county seat of Great Falls, Montana. This sculpture is amongst hundreds of pieces of art that are available at our location in Grandview!
