Made by Ohio artist Robert Martin (1918-1998) from rustic barn wood, this primitive cut-out creates a soldier with crossed arms and a large drum, in a red hat and jacket. Robert Martin (1918-1998) was born in Cleveland, Ohio and raised by his grandmother. His grandmother, having grown up in the Victorian Era, is responsible for the period's influence on his early works. Martin studied the painting from books of the masters, old and new. He worked from life, enjoying the process and interaction that was created. In the 1980s, he began working from photographs with his series of Victorian Village scenes. An ever-learning student, his work has distinctly different decades reflecting his progress and interests. Persisting was his use of oil on canvas, despite his training in other mediums. His poetic soul was evident in his philosophy as an artist.

JEANNE ISENHART(1920-2005) Still Life Original Oil on Canvas
Original oil on canvas painting by renowned Ohio artist Jeanne Isenhart (1920-2005) depicts a traditional still life set up of a blue and white tea seat with a matching floral vase laid out on a white sheet. Bright white, red, and pink flowers punctuate the painting by breaking up the neutral tones on the surface of the canvas. Framed in pale yellow and signed in the lower right hand corner.
About the Artist:
Jeanne Isenhart (1920-2005) was born in Gloversville, New York and studied at the Rhode Island School of Art and Design before serving in the Navy during World War II. Isenhart spent a large portion of her adult career as an interior designer before turning to painting at the age of 60. Described as creating “refined primitive” oil paintings, she created over 600 works of art. Collections of her work include that of the Ohio State House and the Ohio Governor’s Mansion. Isenhart exhibited her work largely in the Midwest and in New York City. She died at 85 in 2005 at the age of 85 in Newark, Ohio.

About the Artist:
David Schackne (1923-2004) was an architect who designed many of Columbus's public high schools. As a teenager he studied at Columbus Art School (now CCAD) and would graduate from Ohio State University with a degree in architecture. He later served as adjunct faculty at OSU, as well as a member of the Ohio Watercolor Society and the Central Ohio Watercolor Society.
