Born in Marietta, Ohio, Gatrell is an alumni of The Ohio State University, where he found an education in art and later would serve on the faculty. Known for his portraits, he was widely exhibited throughout Ohio. An informational card is attached on the reverse.

JAMES YOKO (1916-2004) “Hot Air Balloon” Original Mixed Media on Canvas
This original mixed media on canvas by Ohio regionalist artist James Yoko (1916-2004) depicts a scene of a family watching a hot air balloon rise, the background of the image composed of torn, collaged paper to create an active, abstracted landscape. A central figure within the Dayton, Ohio art scene, Yoko was a prolific artist throughout his lifetime and gifted over 700 paintings to the Dayton Art Institute upon his death in 2012, making his paintings now highly prized for their rarity. This painting is presented in a simple wood framing and has been signed and dated to 1992 by the artist on the back of the canvas.
